Obituary of Lawrence Chester Skonie
Lawrence C. Skonie age 87, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, August 1, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan Skonie; children, Selene (late Ronald) Skonie-Hardin, Steven (Aldona) Skonie and Sharon (Thomas) Martin; grandchildren, Jonathan Skonie, Joseph Skonie and Antoinette Martin; brother, Raymond (Henrietta) Skonieczny; brother in law, Roy Wulatin and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Veronica Skonieczny; brothers, Casimir (Grossman), Chester, Theo and Ben; sisters, Jean, Alice, Ceal, Rose, and Tina, his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Kathleen Zoretich and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church (8303 Taft Street Merrillville, IN) with Rev. Peter J. Muha officiating. Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Crown Point, IN. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Tuesday morning from 9:00 AM until time of Mass at the church. Larry was born on April 21, 1931 in Chicago, IL to the late John and Veronica Skonieczny and attended Bowen High School and CVS in South Chicago. He proudly served our country during the Korean War in the US Army. On July 17, 1954, he married the love of his life, Joan R. Wulatin and together they raised 3 children on the East Side. Larry retired as a police officer from the Chicago PD with 26 years of service. He also was a bricklayer at Youngstown Steel Company. He was a long time member of the Fraternal Order of Police as well as The American Legion. Larry was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend who will truly be missed by all whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Police or Veterans Charities of your choice.
