Arthur Maurel (Art) was born on May 28, 1943, in Globe, Arizona, to Andre and Louise Maurel. He earned a degree in Political Science from San Diego State College before joining the United States Air Force on September 9, 1969. As a Captain, he specialized in investigations and counterintelligence. After his service, Art dedicated 31 years to the Department of State’s Office of Security and Diplomatic Security Service, traveling the world, pursuing criminals, and bringing them to justice. He retired in April 1995 as the head of the RSO department in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Art dedicated his career to the relentless pursuit of justice, undeterred by the challenges he faced. Known as a legend within the State Department, he was an honorable man, often described as a “straight shooter” and a “ballsy” mentor admired for his guts and courage. His mantra, “no one is above the law,” sometimes put him at odds with those in power, but he remained steadfast, believing in doing the right thing. Loyal to his friends and generous to all, Art remained unwavering in his commitment to fighting for good until the end.
Arthur Maurel is survived by his daughter, Tara Yager, and his grandsons, Logan Yager, Gavin Yager, Grayson Yager, and Jamaury Yager, his sisters Marleen O’Neil, Luana Rosenstock, and Mona Maurel.
He was preceded by death by his parents Andre and Louise Maurel, his sister Andrea Maurel, and his daughter Julianna Maurel.
A message from his daughter Tara Yager
You were a good man who taught me the value of hard work, the importance of a firm handshake, and how to find humor even in tough times. You showed me how to fight for justice and what’s right, saving countless lives by putting dangerous people away. You were my hero, a certified badass, and my dad, and I deeply miss you.
If you knew Art, he was pragmatic regarding his desires for funeral arrangements. He didn’t want to have a funeral nor be buried but cremated and his ashes spread in an open space.
Instead of flowers or memorial contributions, I would ask that you share your thoughts and stories of my dad and his incredible life so that I can share those with his grandsons. Please feel free to email them to: [email protected].
