We moved to Scottsdale in 1970, 2 doors down from the Zelechowski's on Devonshire.  Lots of good times back then - with both families - camping in Mexico, (digging and then grilling those delicious clams on the beach), Forest Lake weekends at the trailer (pre-cabin!), riding motorcycles in the desert and up in the mountains, hunting trips and the introduction of the patty-melt from Gene - just to name a few -  Great memories for both families.  We are so sorry for your loss - The Fritz family 



There's no replacing you, Dad. You will always be greatly loved, greatly missed. Memories of you will always abide. Treasures hidden in the heart. Precious jewels to be reflected upon when needing some cheer, encouragement, or just a reminder of whose presence and character shaped me throughout my life. Thanks for pouring out so much of yourself into the life of your family. Your presence is ever reflected in the lives of those who had the privilege of having you beside them.  

So many great memories have been shared about Grandpa Gene. One of my favorites that I have been thinking of happened at the cabin. We were all getting ready to go to sleep up in the loft when we noticed a bat flying around. Everyone started screaming and my dad ran down to Grandma and Grandpa’s room yelling, “Dad, a bat! There’s a bat! Come quick!”. Grandpa came upstairs with a broom and shooed the thing out the door in 2 seconds. At the end, we were all cracking up at how much we had freaked out. I’ve always loved this memory because it reminds of how we all saw him, as the person who could calmly fix any problem. There’s an Irish saying that when you lose a father you lose your umbrella against the storm, and I think we are all feeling that with the loss of Grandpa Gene, our Zelechowski patriarch. We miss you Grandpa! Hoping I don’t cross paths with any bats anytime soon.

Gene and I were in college together in Superior, Wisconsin.  We had fun fishing, going on picnics and working together at a Standard Oil  gas Station.  We both earned a dollar an hour.  That was a lot of money for Gene because his rent was only fifteen dollars a month in city housing complex called Park Place.  I enjoyed fishing with Gene and one night five of us got into a twelve foot boat and almost sank it as the water came over the bow as we had too many people in the boat.  We stayed friends with Gene and his family all these years as I always enjoyed his stories and sense of humor.  We visited Gene and Carol one year and Gary and kathy knudson came over from California at the same time.  We had great fun talking about the old days.  We will miss Gene but happy that he and Carol had a lot of good years together.  

Grandpa Gene was everything a grandpa should be, and I miss him dearly. I fondly recall taking nature walks, going fishing, and eating homemade sour dough pancakes at the cabin together. Grandpa showed me how to whittle and hung my  creations over the mantle. He was funny, intelligent, and kind, as well as a source of comfort and inspiration. When I think of him, I remember the good times. Memories of laughter and the smell of peppermint; warm hugs and goofy jokes; and his undeniably strong spirit. He was loved and he'll be missed, but I know he's is in a better place now. Rest in peace, Grandpa.

Dad, Father, Mentor, Friend, Teacher, Consular....

You will always continue to shape my life and that of my family through the teachings and life experiences we shared.  I wish we had more time, but know that in the time you shared with us all, you inspired all of us to be better people, to give it our all, to be kind and welcoming, honest and helpful, to make other lives better.  We have shared many ups and downs, many sad and trying times, times that would have broke lesser men, but we all persevered and made the best out of the circumstances. You taught us to not abandon our hopes and dreams, to continue struggling to be better and to always enjoy happiness, to make others feel welcomed and loved, and cared for. There are not many who have ever had your range of compassion, honesty, energy, and drive than you displayed throughout your life...You accomplished a great deal and enjoyed the fruits of your industrious life. You lived life your way, and shared it with all of us. It was a good life, an earned life, and a life of example for the rest of us to model our lives after. 

For me, there is one word that describes you, my father:          HERO. 

I admired you when I was the littlest of boys, followed you everywhere as a child, teeneager, man, and father. There is no higher praise I could give a person. We will carry on your passion for life and for treating others well. 

I know you are in Heaven, God sent me a sign that evening  as the sun set in the western sky,  something I watch every night. This time it was much different and most unique, in fact I have never seen such a sunset like it before. There was a vertical shaft of sunlight, narrow and straight, stretching from the horizon and upwards, a solid beam of light was vertical in the same manner, showing me a CROSS of light in the fading sky...a sign from God that you were in Heaven and will be there to watch over all of us. One day we will be together again. I Love you forever and in all ways

I loved you like a father and respected how you put yourself through school and raised a family. You were always so funny, witty and the rock. You were the go to dad that  ould fux anything. We had so much h fun at your home.  We took a few outings together through the years. We went to church together for a few years and enjoyed that together. The events and the spiritual part of it.
Up to Loughlin was our last one.You were always kind and caring. I cant even begin to tell you how much we enjoyed spending weekends st your home, going g to the cabin a d all the things you taught us.  You were brilliant.  You helped us when ever we asked like most dads do. My children all loved you.Your going to be missed greatly. Rest in peace and  I will see you again . I cant believe your gone. We all lived you so much and you made a huge difference in our lives. Until we meet agian. Thank you for loving our family so much. Rest in  peace.  We all love you and you made a huge difference in our lives. May God give you peace.


I'm going to miss you grandpa. Lots of good memories over the years. You shared your interest in the forest, rocks and minerals, and wine making with me and those are still some of my favorite things.  I remember visiting one summer on highschool and you shared some goldschloger with me on the porch of the cabin and we looked at the stars. Sad that we will miss you here on Earth but happy knowing you are back to yourself in heaven. 

Grandpa Z, the man that always scooped the frozen ice cream for everyone, no matter how hard. Always the gentlemen. I've always loved my grandpa's witt and humor with the forever memorable 'snottsdale' t-shirts. Weeks at the cabin are some of my most cherished memories. I got my first trout at rainbow lake with my grandpa's guidance. So much of who I am today was shaped by all the memories and laughter with you Grandpa. Love you, rest peacefully.
