A memorial service to celebrate a beautiful soul will be held Saturday, April 20th, at Green Acres Cemetery in Scottsdale, Arizona.
She was born on May 23, 1951, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Robert Walcott and Norma Walcott (Bessey). They moved to Arizona in 1952 when Mary was only 9 months old. Her father was in the telephone industry in Tucson after serving in WWII. Norma worked for many years as a classroom aide and secretary.
Mary loved spending time playing in the deserts of Tucson with her younger four siblings. She graduated from Catalina High School in 1969. During the summers, Mary worked as a nursing home aide. She then attended Dordt College, where she met and married Donald Lee Addink from Orange City, Iowa. After graduation, Mary taught for two years in a one-room school house before moving to Dallas, Texas. There, Mary became a homemaker after giving birth to her first child, Jason, while her husband worked as an actuary. Less than two years later, Mary and Don were blessed with a daughter, Gina.
In Dallas, she helped found Bethel Christian Reformed Church. She was an active volunteer and member of her community. She and Don moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1982, where they continued to grow their family with two more daughters. Jodi was born in 1983 and Angela came along in 1986.
Wherever she went, Mary was an active member of her community - volunteering to carpool kids, chaperone field trips, lead ministries at Phoenix Christian Reformed Church for many years, visit the sick and elderly, and many other unseen tasks. Mary did everything humbly with a servant’s heart, bringing joy and comfort to those around her.
Mary adored learning and trying out new things. She also loved supporting her grandchildren at any and all activities. When she wasn’t out for lunch with a friend, she was reading a new book, clipping out the latest fun fact, listening for the sound of a train, or belting out a Linda Ronstadt song. Her joyful and generous spirit will be greatly missed.
Mary Addink is survived by her sisters, Janna (John) Van Egmond, Christine (Mark) Hiemstra, and Ruth (Steve) Sleight; brother, Robert (Sarah) Walcott Jr.; 1 son Jason (Paige) Addink; and two daughters, Gina (Timothy Bohnett) Addink and Angela Steinle, plus 11 grandchildren and 5 granddogs.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Donald Addink and her 16 year old daughter, Jodi Lynn Addink.
Donations may be sent to one of her four favorite charities: Doctors Without Borders, Water Mission, World Central Kitchen, or Homes for Our Troops.
