Barkat Masih Sandhu was born to Chaudhary Harjalu and Umran Bibi on 17th of April, 1943 in Stuntzabad, Pakistan. This farmer family was blessed with other six sons and a daughter. While growing up in Stuntzabad, Barkat enjoyed playing soccer, basketball and riding his motorcycle. He was passionate about going to church and living as a good Christian. In 1958 he completed his high school from Mission High School. He went to Khanewal Government College for further studies. He finished two Bachelor Degrees: BA and B.Ed. and a Master’s in Arts. He also went to a Teaching Training Institute in Ghakhar, Gujranwala, Pakistan. He started his career as a Secondary School teacher with the Government St. Joseph High School, in Lahore, Pakistan. He taught Math, Social Studies and English to Middle School children.
In 1965, Barkat met his wife, Cinderella, and they exchanged marriage vows the same year. They were blessed with a daughter Esther and two sons Alwin, and Melwin.
In 1968, Barkat transferred to teach at Islamia High School, where he worked until his retirement in 1998. He was the only Christian teacher on the faculty of the school comprising of 70 teachers. His inspirational work ethic made him stand out. The principal of his school gave him higher responsibilities, as he had confidence in Barkat’s abilities as a teacher. Barkat worked extra hours at Islamia High School in order to provide for his family and keep them happy.
As the time passed and all three children got married, Barkat and Cinderella were blessed with eight grandchildren. It always made them very happy and proud. They moved to America in 2004 to live closer to their children and grandchildren. Barkat continued to impress everyone that he met with his bright smile and shining charisma. He was a positive role model for those around him and was loved very dearly. He continued going to church and living according to Christ.
On October 29th, 2019, Barkat passed away as a result of Pulmonary Fibrosis, a terminal lung disease in Everett, Washington. He is survived by his wife, Cinderella, daughter, Esther Rubina, sons Alwin and Melwin, daughter in laws Zubia and Shahida, grandchildren Ruth, Zibiah, Aliza, Naveed, Merab, Arella, Ibraham, and Salman. He left his imprint on the lives of his children, grandchildren and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
