Carla, I was thinking of you yesterday and couldn't believe that you left us five years ago. I see your face every day because I have your photo on my bedstand, and I see posts on Facebook and your "Likes" on my posts when "Memories" pop us. You are always in my heart, and I miss you so much.

Bless you Carla...you were a special woman /mom, wife, friend to many!  Always with Love~~~ San Juan Island Ohana.

Carla will always be remembered.... My nephew, Albert, and Carla were married...  bless both of them!


Our family is so sad to hear of Carla's passing.  My hope is that this message will still be received by her family.
We lived next door to Al, Carla and Eva for many years and considered them dear friends.
We haven't seen each other in years but regularly reminisce about the old times and have wondered how you've been.

Carla was my aunt. She was a very nice lady who always asked how I was doing, wanted to know how things were going, and would listen to what I had to say. I was always grateful for the haircuts and holiday meals she treated me to. I think she had a care free quality that was pleasant and helped ease everyday pressures. I am sorry for her family’s loss, and will miss her very much.

What an amazing woman. Her kind and caring nature made me feel like I had a second mom. Her tales about her life and her adventures always made me laugh and at the same time they helped me to feel more excepted in my own journey.

 She loved fiercely, always putting others needs, especially her familys, before her own. She might have been the most selfless person I have ever met particularly,  when it came to loving her own...but when it came to celebrating, she would break it down to the ground! Here's to all of those cherished memories of talking, laughing, and dancing to the break of dawn!

I am Carla's aunt.  I was eleven years old when Carla was born.  My mother, my brother and I lived in the Sandstone house, later referred to as the duplex.  Carla's parents, consisting of my sister Carmecita and family, also lived in the Sandstone house.   The Sandstone house included an upstairs living space and a downstairs living space for the blended families. 
 When Carla was born I remember a lot of changes in our lives I didn't fully understand.  On occasion, our two blended families would change living arrangements upstairs for downstairs.   
As Carla grew up going to Alki grade school my mother, brother and I referred to her lovingly as Carla'-la' sounding like the french expression Oh la' la'.  
Throughout her school years and later Carla'-la' exuded that extra oh la' la' as she would put herself out there trying out different ways of expressing herself.  She tried different hairstyles following trends and eventually becoming a hair stylist.   I recall at one of the family gatherings Carla showed us a photo of Cher in one of her sexiest gowns that Carla was going to modify for herself.   There's that oh la' la' expression again. 
At family gatherings Carla was always friendly, authentic and always direct in her comments or questions.  Often asking or commenting on what others may have only been thinking. 
The entire family gatherings became fewer as marriages and children and new living locations were established.  
Now with the passage of time and ensuing transitions, I am sending thoughts to Carla, reassuring her that she will never be forgotten.  She will always be Carla'-la' in my memories.  
My family and I send our condolences to my sister Carmecita and family and to Carla's extended family for your too soon loss.   

It was always fun and lively when Carla joined us at a bar!  I treasure getting to spend time with her last year.  Brandie, Matt and Mason you poured your hearts into preparing your home for your “mommy” and Albert.  I’m so sorry your time all together was so short.  Sending you lots of love, and wishing you comfort as you mourn.  -Anna, Kip and Claire

I’m not certain my aunt Carla knew how I felt about her, so I’m grateful for the opportunity to, at least, share this sentiment here. She was a fierce woman, mother, and grandmother, and I admired her greatly. To an outsider, not knowing her well or knowing her history, that might come as a surprising description -- “fierce.” You see, hers was a quiet strength. She had a warmth about her that made you instantly feel at ease. She was humble and generous; welcoming the family to her home on many Thanksgivings--she was a wonderful cook. She had a very playful side, as well. I have a vivid childhood memory of her pretending to try and pinch my brother’s “booty” as he went running by squealing, just out of arm’s reach, over and over, never tiring of the game. She had an easy laugh that I loved--throaty and guttural-- and that made any gathering seem more fun, because it seemed she was having fun. She was a real “people person,”  “down to earth,” and a great listener; always genuinely interested in what you had to say and concerned for how you were doing.  

However, she was also a graduate of the “school of hard knocks,” having been dealt more than her fair share of setbacks and obstacles. It would be easy to underestimate her, given her laid back, easy going manner, but you would be a fool. She was amazingly resilient, managing to face whatever hardship life threw at her with dignity and grace. She always took things in stride, as if letting go of the past and living in the present was her default way of being in the world. She lived her values, putting family first, and poured her energy into caring for her husband, daughters and grandchildren. So when I think of my aunt, the Gloria Gaynor song “I Will Survive,” often plays in my head; especially the line, “...as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive…”. My aunt Carla was a survivor. Her strength, her fierceness, clearly lives on in her daughters, and her love stays alive in us all.  May she rest in peace.

My sweet sister Carla sent this photo to Gary and me for Christmas 1983, “With lots of Love.” That describes her beautifully—lots of love, no matter the circumstances or obstacles in her life. She had a loving and even-tempered disposition and was always ready to laugh. She was adventurous as a young teen, never afraid to experiment with her hair color and style. No wonder she attended cosmetology school to learn about hairstyling. She was one of the most resilient women I’ve ever known, able to fight back from any physical, emotional, or mental setback. She impressed me when she taught herself how to file a liability claim against neighbors when her daughter broke her arm on their trampoline. And, oh my, could she dance! My heart goes out to her family—husband Albert, daughters Brandy and Eva, and their children. I’m so sad that she suffered from the devastating effects of ALS disease, and I hope she’s now at peace, resting in the arms of Angels.
