I'll always remember your kind words and your ability to see the bright side of everything. You will be deeply missed. 

I met Dan through Christopher Williams (Deputy Sup./Chief of Staff@Seattle Parks & Rec)  during my 2nd year at SPR. Dan called to arrange lunch with Christopher and while we were making arrangements he asked if I would like to join them for lunch.  The three of us met at West Seattle Fish House and would continue to do so for several more years there or at Sun Fish until  he retired.

Dan was a kind and thoughtful person, I will miss his funny comments and hearing about his family including the dog. 

My sincere condolences to his family and friends. Dan will be missed but always remembered fondly.

Although I have been a Parks Department employee for almost 20 years, I didn't know Dan until we became next door neighbors in 2018. 

Dan was out on his front porch from the first day, checking in with us, asking us about our move. We were delighted that we both had the Parks Department in common. He was an invaluable source of information about how to take care of our new yard, what was going on in the department and in the neighborhood. He talked to everyone, and knew all the happenings! :-) 

He was especially kind to our special needs son who asked him endless questions. He was patient and supportive of our whole family as we have navigated the challenges of raising a special needs child. 

I had many talks with Dan over the past 2+ years. I didn't know the last conversation I would have with him was just a few days before he passed. I think about him all the time, and miss him immensely. He was a good guy. He sure did love those dogs.

I worked with Dan at east central for many years in the rain, sleet ,snow  and ice. Wet and cold from the days when we didn't have  the nice rain gear. Every winter was cold and wet  picking up leaves, clearing roads of storm debris. I remember driving the dump trucks in the king dome picking up the astroturf that the parks got for free. We took a break and passed the foot ball around in the field inside the dome with the crew. Lots of good times with Dan. We both retired at the same time, he had 38 years to my 35 years. Lots of good memories,so many .The good old days are gone.  Carlene sorry for your loss. He was good man.

Taught alot of different folks how to do and fix things . Another thing I noticed was all dogs liked him .

They would come right up to him . He would put his hand out and pet them .

He will be very missed .

I worked at the Seattle Parks Department with Dan for many years.   He was quite a character and we shared many laughs together.   I started at the Parks department in 1978 and I think Dan started somewhere around the same period, too..  Though I retired in 2014, I've stayed in contact with mutual friends that know both Dan and I.  I'd like to express my heartfelt sympathy to his long-time loving wife Carlene ; all her loved ones, family and friends.

So sorry to read of Dans passing! We have been neighbors for many years I will miss the many impromptu conversations we had over the years! He will be greatly missed. RIP Dan!😢

Dan was a person I always looked forward to bumping into. He was intelligent and entertaining at the same time. I would always leave our talks feeling better about life. Years ago I was put in EC. District for a few weeks. Dan made this experience easy for me which made it easy for everyone. Dan was truly a unique Man and I will miss him. Condolences to Dan’s family and Karlene.

No one can prepare you for loosing a brother. I lost my Brother, Defender, Protector and closest friend. We we talking together on the phone on September 12th like always. Dan kept sending me photos of when we were growing up. Dan sent photos of us in North Dakota, Texas, The Philippines and places we traveled. Dan sent photos of us being Altar Boys together and also of us being in the Boy Scouts. Really great memories we had growing up. We were so close. I didn't know that would be the last time we would converse with each other. I am so thankful to have had such a wonderful brother and friend. I miss Dan every day. My Love to the Family and Friends.

So sorry to hear of Dan’s passing. I knew him from my early years in the Park Dept; when he was on the Volunteer Park crew and I was in the Conservatory.  He was always interested in any surplus plants that were available. This led to some interesting trades. 
Years later  I was aware of his reforestation efforts around Washington Park, the Incense Cedars Sara mentioned. I don’t know how he got all the trees he planted, but in the Dept it was always easier to get forgiveness than permission.

I worked with Dan for many years in Seattle Parks Dept.. He was a friend and one of my favorite people to work with. He was smart, capable,  and always kept a dull work day interesting and entertaining  with his humor and wit. He did the best safety meeting on chainsaws, very informative but had us laughing so hard, we were falling out of our chairs. I will really miss him.
RIP Dan.


I first spoke with Dan when I was new employee at SPR in the CE District. We were at Madison Beach and he told me all about the city and his family's involvement. He made sure I spelled his name correctly. I still can not get it right. I work in the same area again. When I see the incense  cedar trees planted at Washington Park Playfield I always think of Dan. Years ago he and a few others tackled the poison hemlock on the hillsides and planted the trees. I will always think of Dan when I see those trees.
