Born on March 24, 1928, Gene was raised in Yakima, Washington along with his Nickoloff cousins who were like brothers to him. At the age of 17 he joined the Merchant Marines and traveled around the entire world by the time he was 20. Following his service he settled in Seattle, joining the fledgling Manson Construction Company in 1955. His talents in marine engineering and construction can still be seen all around the waterfront landmarks of Puget Sound.
During his more than 35 years at Manson his crew and their families became life long friends. Even after his retirement this group along with other friends, neighbors, and family enjoyed wonderful gatherings, sharing laughter, dancing and delicious potlucks.
Gene's easygoing way, understanding heart and helpfulness, endeared him to all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sharon Lynn Jenkins Kirk. Together they raised her two children, Barbara Lynn Marchese and James Roger Kirk. Gene is also survived by two of his three children with his first wife Margaret Helen Systad, who pre-deceased him along with son, Randy Arthur Smith. Gordon Eugene Smith and Pamela Smith King along with Barbara and James will miss their devoted father. Gene's 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren will be forever grateful for his love and each will miss his many acts of kindness, dependability, sense of humor and smile.
The family is planning a private celebration of his life in the future.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to the charity of your choice in his name.
