Wayne Bishop was born in Bentonville, Arkansas in 1925. As a toddler, he traveled with his mother Gladys and Grandfather to the Skagit River valley area of Western Washington. Wayne would joke that he didn’t know his first name as “Garland” until he was 16 years old.
Gladys would go on to marry John McCalib, and her young son Wayne would grow into the role of big brother to his siblings Betty, Dale, Doyle and Mary, and the family settled in the town of Lyman, Washington. Wayne loved hunting and fishing in the hills and rivers around Lyman, and was a reliable source of venison every fall.
Wayne attended Sedro Woolley High School (Go Cubs!), where he met and fell in love with Jeanne Charlotte Attwell, made the All-Washington State High School Football Team as a defensive back, signed on with the US Army Air Corps, and graduated in June 1944. He was training for B-25 bomber flight crew duty when the war ended.
After his discharge from the service, Wayne resumed his education, married Jeanne Charlotte Attwell to whom he remained married for 49 years, earned a BS degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington, and started work at Seattle City Light where he worked for 37 years. He spent his career working with hydro-electric power generation and distribution systems, for which his University Substation design won national recognition. After retirement, he relished his yearly trip to Ketchikan, AK for salmon fishing, earning him the private knick-name “Border Collie of Fishing”. Wayne moved to Livermore, California in 2016 to be close to his family, where he loved to walk on sunny days, tinker with his R/C planes, and wear long underwear all year long.
His respectful demeanor, patience, and intelligence left a lasting impression on family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and little league baseball team players who knew him.
Wayne is survived by brother Doyle (Marlene) McCalib, sister Mary (Ron) Holmes, sister-in-law Beverly (Dale) McCalib, son David, daughter in law Nancy, Granddaughter Kathryn (Dane) Keohohou, Granddaughter Emily (Clayton) Callon, Grandson Daniel (Melissa), and Great Grandchildren Le’a and Mya Keohohou.
