James Robert Dalrymple, 94, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2020. Jim was born, raised and lived in West Seattle, where he attended West Seattle High School. At age sixteen he joined the Merchant Marines and traveled the world. He worked on board twelve different ships, maintaining and operating the boilers as a Stationary Engineer.
After World War II, he returned to West Seattle where he joined the International Union of Operating Engineers chapter 286/302 and continued his career as a Stationary Engineer. He worked at Darigold’s Ranier Ave Plant for 30 years and at Carnation’s University Village Plant for another 10 years. He is one of the Unions longest members and was honored for his loyalty in November 2019. Even though he never entered the market, Jim was also a licensed real estate agent, having passed his licensing exam on his first attempt!
He met his wife Mary on a blind date through mutual friends and they were married six months later. They were devoted to each other for seventy years and had three children: Bob (Grace), Colin, and Donna. They also have four grandchildren: Joel, Kellen, Jade, and Michelle and one great grandson Kayson.
Jim enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities. He was often seen golfing, hunting, fishing, and camping. He also enjoyed water sports including boating and clam digging. If he wasn’t berry picking, he was tending to his garden, planting way too many tomatoes for his own use, often to the benefit of many neighbors and friends.
Jim was a devoted Christian and loved the Lord. After embracing Jesus, his legacy of service included roofing a church building, serving as financial steward, leading a small church group, praying for consistent proclamation of Jesus in West Seattle. He also survived teaching Sunday School classes for boys in junior high, bless his heart!
May you rest in God’s loving presence true to your favorite verse: John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
