Josef was born on December 21, 1930, in Geisenfeld Germany. Growing up as the oldest son on his family’s hops farm, Josef quickly realized the farming life was not for him.
He left home at age 14 to apprentice in the hospitality industry at many of Europe’s finest hotels and resorts.
He met the love of his life, the beautiful Ingeborg at a New Year’s Eve dance in 1950, as Germany was recovering from World War II. Looking for a brighter future, he immigrated to the United States in 1956 and found work immediately as a waiter at the famous Luchow’s Resturant in New York City. He found life in America a blessing and believed that he could provide a wonderful life for his beloved Inge and their future family together. He soon paid for her passage from Munich to Manhattan and they married shortly thereafter.
Upon Luchow’s closing, Josef moved to manage Caper’s Restaurant in Manhattan. He then became the manager of corporate dining services for the Equitable Life Insurance Company in New York City until he retired. Josef took pride in everything he did and loved his family dearly.
He is survived by his beloved wife Ingeborg (Reiterberger) Weichenrieder; his son John and his wife Jean Weichenrieder; his daughter Linda and her husband Richard Gargiulo; his beloved grandchildren Jennifer, John Francis, Richard Joseph and Kirsten Marie.
A memorial gathering will be announced at a later date. Cremation was private.
