July 28, 1928 – September 25, 2018.
Long time Shawnee resident, Donald P. Grimes, passed away peacefully Tuesday night in Assisted Living of Montgomery County, Conroe, Texas. He was born in the ACH Hospital in Shawnee. Early in his childhood the family moved from Tecumseh to Shawnee, where the Grimes family was established and where Don served and lived most of his life.
Don graduated from Shawnee High School as a member of the class of 1946. He attended the University of Oklahoma for one and one half years. Don served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After two years of service he was honorably discharged in November 1952.
He then married the love of his life Mary “Barbara” Bell on July 7, 1954. They were happily married for near fifty-one years until the death of Barbara in June of 2005. The center and focus of Don’s life was his beloved wife, his three sons and friends.
In his adult life, Grimes worked for the American National Bank in Shawnee. Following his term of employment, he and his brother Joe were partners in Harold’s Men’s Wear located on the corner of Main and Bell in downtown Shawnee. In 1972, Grimes was then employed by the Federal National Bank where he served for 26 years successful retiring as a Senior Vice President and member of the Board of Directors. During his tenure Federal National became BancFirst with branches throughout the State of Oklahoma.
In his spare time, Don was a gifted and an accomplished artist. His paintings, drawings and renderings are beloved by his family and are treasured by friends across the state.
Don loved the outdoor sporting life. He was an accomplished fly fisherman, a sport in which he greatly excelled. Too, he was an avid pheasant, quail and duck hunter. His friends stated over the years what a good shot he was.
Don Grimes loved and took pride in Oklahoma and the City of Shawnee. In his business and personal decisions he was always concerned of how his actions would impact making Shawnee the wonderful community that it is today. He was a long time member of the Kiwanis Club of Shawnee.
He was a member of the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Greatly loved by his family and a host of wonderful friends.
Don is preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Gene Grimes; his wife Barbara Grimes and son Mark Grimes; his older brother Bob Grimes. He is survived by his brother, Joe Grimes and his wife Carol of Springfield, MO; son Brock Grimes and his wife Laurina of Montgomery, TX; his middle son Rev. D. Price Grimes, Jr. of Oklahoma City. Grimes is survived by three grandsons; Brett Grimes and his wife Rory of Oklahoma City; McCall Grimes and his wife Jadrien of Houston, TX; Garrett Grimes and his wife Rian of Midland, TX. He is survived by three great-granddaughters, Violet Grimes; Eleanor Rose Grimes; Harper June Grimes. Don is also survived by a niece, Michelle Doughty of Edmond, nephews Mike Bell of Edmond, OK, Stanley Grimes of Denver, CO and David Grimes of Springfield, MO.
