Barbara is preceded in death by her beloved husband, United States Navy Veteran Harry Steven (Steve) Harter; son Dale Baker; daughter Susan Timpf and grandson Christopher Timpf.
She is survived by daughters, Sherrye Baker and Erika Coleman; her brother, Charles “Chuck” Wheeler; six grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
Barbara was a mathematical wiz, working many years as a sought-after bookkeeper. Her last bookkeeping job, before retiring, led her to close friend Kay who has become a loving friend to the family.
Barbara loved travelling throughout the US and Canada with Steve in their motorhome, enjoying nature, collecting rocks as her souvenirs and entertaining family and friends who joined them in their travels. Barbara may have enjoyed Steve “lovingly” lugging those rocks around for her while exasperating “Bar-bah-rah!” a bit too much.
An enjoyer of casinos (especially the slots) her daughters would often be able to locate her by the sounds of stampeding buffalo or howling wolves as she triggered the bonuses on her favorite slot machines.
Barbara was so many things; a race car driver; a lover of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Krystals and the Varsity; a fabulous Southern cook; an animal lover – loving mom to rabbits, dogs, cats, gerbils and a skunk named Taz; a mom to heart-dogs Kona, Cinnamon, Ginger and Mitzi; an avid movie watcher and DVD collector; a prolific concert attender; a master bridge player, always looking forward to her weekly bridge game at the Snellville Senior Center; but mostly and most proudly, Mom, Grandma and friend.
Barbara was granted a second chance at love in 1974 when reconnected with her high school sweetheart – they had a beautiful, loving and respectful relationship that many long to experience.
Our family is comforted that she is now at peace with Steve, his camper parking and drive-off checklists, and their beloved pups.
Visitation with the family will be held Wednesday, May 8 from 12:00 – 2:00 at Eternal Hills Funeral Home, Snellville, Georgia with the service immediately following in the Eternal Hills Chapel.
Interment will be Thursday, May 9 at 1:30 at the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, Georgia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society.
