It is hard to believe Horace and my Dad are both gone. I remember so many fond memories of them both. Playing cards with them and they both hated to loose. I still smile often thinking of the funny things they would say and do. Those two were really meant to be best buddies. I love them both and miss them dearly. They will always be close in my heart. I can just imagine the trouble they are causing in heaven. Makes me smile.....

Larry and I loved Horace very much.  He and Hyla are very special to us.  Horace would call us at least once a week to see if we were doing okay.  He will be greatly missed.  We know he is in a better place and most of all is healed of his suffering.  We are praying for God to comfort you during this time.  Hyla, we love you very much.

I have known Horace since since I was in  2nd grade, Amy and I met playing softball.  Amy and I were best friends and I have spent many nights over at their house.  I always remember Horace being in his chair taking a nap, reading the newspaper, watching the Braves, Choir practice on Wednesday nights, selling cars, deer hunting  or singing in the shower.  He always had a good laugh,  but one particular night I think he got a kick out of something..... Amy and I had gone to Stone Mountain to see Billy Ray Cyrus.  After the concert we went to McDonalds.  Amy had driven but unfortunately she locked her keys in the car so we had to call Horace.  Amy was afraid he was going to be mad and he might have for a second.  But instead Horace made fun of her and said in a funny voice Billy Ray Cyrus got you all excited and locked your keys in the car and proceeded to sing Achy Breaky Heart. I am thankful for  memories like this Horace always treated me like family.  RIP Horace. 

Papa was a great man. He was the best Papa my grandkids could have had,He would always go out of the way to make you feel welcome. His smiling face and his loving heart will be missed by many💕💕

Horace was a good husband, father, grandfather, and a special friend. We had great times together going out to eat, at the lake and being together with him and Hyla.  He was very kind and would do anything, if needed.  

We will miss his smiling face, and the delicious margaritas he made.

Never going to forget shooting my first deer out of the old box stand with papa. Definitely going to miss all of our talks and how he always asked about the deer I was after. 

I have a life long memories of the greatest Dad ever! The many conventions and life lessons that he taught me over the years. Whether we were sitting in a tree stand together or listening to the tires squeal rounding the curves headed to the mountains. All these things helped me become the man I am today!

I have so many memories with my papa. While this isn’t one specific memory I have with him, it is something I will always remember. Every time I would walk in his house the first thing I would do is go in to the living where he was sitting in his chair. And every time the first thing he would say to me was “Hey buddy!” In pure excitement. I’m always going to remember the smile that I brought to his face every time I went to go see him. 

Not only was Horace my Uncle but He was my friend!  I will miss our phone calls the most!   The humor, gossip, political comments, sports, and discussing the events happening in the lives of his family!  RIP my friend!

I remember sitting in front of Horace in his recliner, and asking for his blessing to take his daughter’s hand in marriage. His response was, “Yes, but you can’t give her back!”. We chuckled about that several times over the years. Horace was a good man, a man’s man, and I will miss him.

I have fond memories of talks and phone calls about his Braves. Papa would always ask how I was doing in baseball and school . If there was someone who wanted me to succeed, it was Papa. He cared about my passion for sports and always made it to games when he could. I remember every time after games that he came to, we would always go out to eat after and spend quality time together. 

Dad taught me quite a bit about life, but the most important thing I learned from him was, “You don’t have to like everybody, but you need to be nice to everybody.” ❤️
I will miss our late night talks where we tried to solve the problems of the world.😁

I have many good memories with papa, but I always loved just sitting and talking to papa. Whenever we were done talking or I was going home, he would always tell me I had a special place in his heart and it would make my day. I will miss our talks, and I will miss you lots papa. I love you!

Papa would always tell me how he would pull me down the hill with a string attached to a box lid. He would beam with excitement every time he told me this memory. I don’t remember the box lid very well but I will always remember the excitement it brought to my papa. 


My Papa,
You are one of the most amazing people I’ve meat in my life. You made me smile when I was down and made me laugh when I was crying. You’re  a very forgiving person, I’m not just saying that because you’re  my papa.  A lot of people thought that way about you. I remember when we would sit in your chair and just talk about life and how each others days been. Thank you for being my amazing and wonderful papa

I have many memories  of Horace and I always enjoyed being with him and Hyla. He always made you feel  welcome in his home and you knew that he would give you a good laugh.  We went on trips together and shared meals together. One trip in particular was a trip to Pigeon Forge. We laughed a lot on that trip. I would help with Hyla’s yard sales and he and I would take charge giving Hyla a break. She would have made more money without our help. Oh the fun we had.Horace did enjoy wheeling and dealing.

One thing I know for sure about Horace, was his love for Hyla and his family. He will be missed by many.  Rest In Peace my dear friend. 

As long as I have known Horace, Every time I called the house phone he would answer: “Hello Darling “. Ben and I just loved him!❤️❤️❤️

Our hearts are sad but we smile when we think of Horace. He was a good friend. I met him at my Dad's playing poker. He was my Dad's best friend. When Dad passed Horace was there with me everyday while Dad was in hospital. He and I bonded and called each other ever so often just to catch up. I will miss those calls and wish I had called more. I know he and Dad are having their well known rummy tournaments and smiling down at us. I think Dad is glad to be with his friend again.

In 1976 I was a recruit in the DeKalb Police Academy.  One morning we all met Officer Horace Deaver.  Everyone said he was a legend. He spoke to our class and warned us sternly about the dangers of police work. I was so impressed with Horace. He had been shot and almost died but he was not bitter. He had a great sense of humor. I would see him around headquarters and again he was smiling. 
Fast forward to 2020 and I am now in documentary film business. I am working with the son of Judge Arthur Kaplan to honor his Dad and he said I should talk to Horace's daughter, Amy.  I called and we talked. I was so hesitate to ask when Horace passed away. Amy said "John, would you like to interview Dad for your film?" I was stunned - after forty plus years Horace was alive!  We all met and he again he told the story of the shootout.  He was not bitter or angry.  He now had cancer and was fighting like he always fought.  With a smile and good cheer. I finally realized that Horace refused to that incident define his life. His family was his legacy. 
I told my sons about the interview. I only hope they are half as brave and dignified as Horace Deaver. 



Mr. Horace was always so, so kind to my family and I. My brother was always kidding with him, and he always answered so light heartedly. He always smiled, he always had a warm and sincere laugh and words to give to others. He always made you feel welcome and wanted in his home. We loved him and love you all so much! We are praying for you! Horace will not be forgotten! 

Mr Deaver was always so fun to be around. He made hilarious comments and always greeted me with a smile. One particular memory that still makes me giggle: packing the car early one am for a trip to FL and he looks at us girls and makes a crazy noise...we were like was is THAT? Mr Deaver replied simply, that is the noise a squirrel makes.  The Saturday morning of his passing a crazy squirrel was making noise during my afternoon walk. What a God Wink! Horace I will miss you! You and Hyla have been my neighbor for many years, but you and Hyla accepted me as your family.  You were always someone I could trust to give me honest advice when I needed it.  Thank you for being my friend all these many years! 

Horace worked for me and was in charge of the Property Room at the Police Department for a few years prior to his retirement.  He was a great guy, always pleasant and fun to be around. Always had a smile on his face. 
He will be missed and God bless his family ..

As a DeKalb County rookie police officer, I have fond memories of Horace.  We worked in the uniformed division together.  He was always informative and was respected among his peers. I recalled when he was shot in the line of duty and suffered life threatening injuries.  Later he returned to work, to continue his duty to the citizens of DeKalb County.  I spoke to him many times concerning his injuries and how it affected his life.  Horace and I took some of the same classes at DeKalb Junior College that I will always keep in my memories,10-42.  

Rest in peace brother.


We pray for God’s peace and comfort for Hyla and the family. Reflecting on all the times we shared with Horace, Hyla and their children. Many great times together at the deer hunting club, softball, baseball and football fields, school activities  and other things in our earlier days with our children. You all are forever in our hearts and prayers as you go through this time in your life. May God bless each of you all. 

I met Horace when I was 19 years old. He was a person I went to for information on anything .I  am going to miss him so much.
