

On Tuesday, July 30, Howard G. Dean, Jr., one of the "Greatest Generation" and a true patriot passed away. Mr. Dean will be remembered for his unique service to his country as a Lt. in the U. S. Army in the Pacific Theater during WWII, many outstanding achievements thereafter, and his love and devotion to his wife of 65 years and family. Mr. Dean was 92 years old. He lived his life full of the vigor of one who saw his parents overcome the Great Depression. Mr. Dean was a brilliant scholar, who excelled in electrical engineering. Upon joining the U. S. Army, he was recognized as a great asset for the Army Signal Corp, specializing in radar. His skills led him to technical accomplishments for the Army in the Philippines during WWII, work for the Civil Aeronatics Association, NASA, Scientific Atlanta, and the Georgia Tech Engineering Experiment Station. His children say of him, "He developed the radar that put men on the moon." His work and travels took him all over the world, and he was recognized for that work in the Georgia Tech Hall of Fame. He was a man passionate for work ethic, determination, love of family, and the joy of friends. He is survived by his WWII bride, Rita Dean, his son, Howard III, daughter-in-law, Amy Dean, his daughter, Alicia Sheppard and son-in-law, Mitch Sheppard, grandchildren, Christopher Dean, Kevin Dean, Melissa Dean, Maren Sheppard, Maggie Sheppard, Michael Sheppard and four great grandchildren. The Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, August 3, 2013 in the Eternal Hills Chapel with Rev. Caleb Clarke officiating. Tributes in Mr. Dean's memory may be placed at www.mem.com.
