
Southington- James R. Braun, 81, of Southington, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2008 at the Avalon Health Care Center in Mystic. He was the beloved husband for 62 years of Barbara (Wickel)Braun who died in February of this year.
He was born on Feb. 2, 1927 in Reading, PA, the son of the late Leo and Catherine (Gibney) Braun. He was a graduate of Albright College in Reading where he starred on the basketball team. One of his finest athletic moments he relived again and again was when he played at the Boston Garden. Jim, or Jimmy as his friends and family knew him, was a U.S. Army Veteran of WW II and served as a member of the US occupation force in Japan.
Prior to his retirement 20 years ago, he was employed at Fafnir Bearing Co. in New Britain as the Production Control Manager. At Fafnir, he received numerous awards and built many friendships. He was an active parishioner of St. Dominic Church and also a founding member. A charter volunteer, Jim also served as president of the Southington Jaycees. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at SouthingtonCountry Club. A whiz with cards, he was a member of the Calendar House where he held a fine reputation at winning gin rummy. He also served as president of Condo 6 at Spring Lake Village where he lived with Barbara. Most recently, he resided in East Lyme, CT.
He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth and her husband Kevin Brouillard of East Lyme, a grand-daughter Riley and her brother Justin. He also leaves a brother Richard Braun and his wife Marian, 2 sisters-in-law, Fern and Marie Braun and many nieces and nephews, all of Reading, PA.
The Funeral will be held on Monday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. to St. Dominic Church, 1050 Flanders Rd at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors at Oak Hill Cemetery will follow where Jim and Barbara will make their final resting place together. Calling hours will be on Sunday from 2-5 p.m.
