

Michael Joseph DeChesser, 82, of the Plantsville section of Southington, passed away on Friday, December 5, 2025 at his home following a brief illness. He leaves his loving longtime companion of 46 years, Faye (Johnson) Bernardi of Plantsville.
Michael was born on March 24, 1943, in New Britain, the son of the late John Joseph and Dahlia Rita (Ascare) DeChesser. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran who faithfully served his country in Korea. Michael later retired from Stop & Shop, where he worked for many years with dedication and reliability.
A passionate bass fisherman, Michael found peace on the water and joy in the outdoors. To those who knew him, he was more than a companion, brother, or friend—he was a steady counselor whose wisdom, patience, and kindness left a lasting impression on countless lives.
In addition to Faye, he leaves two brothers, Lawrence DeChesser of North Wilkesboro, NC, and Louis DeChesser of Atlanta, GA; and a sister, Carol Prey of Kissimmee, FL, along with several nieces and a nephew. He is also survived by Faye’s children, Rick Bernardi of South Carolina, Debbie Souza and her husband Everett of Westerly, RI, Lori Miller and her husband Ted of Plantsville, along with Faye’s grandchildren Rick Bernardi Jr. and Joseph Bernardi of South Carolina, Brian Walter who was Mike’s “wingman”, Dale Walter of North Carolina, and Ted Miller of plantsville. He was predeceased by Danielle Miller.
Michael’s warmth, generosity, and quiet strength will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, January 31st from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
