

He was born on Sept. 22, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Werner C. and Helen (Hughes) Henkel Sr. He was a true city boy and an avid sports fan. While being and exceptional basketball and stickball athlete in NY he chose to pursue a career in education. He graduated from Teacher’s College of CT (CCSU) in New Britain in 1955 with a Bachelor’s Degree in teaching, which is where he met his lifelong love. He also held a Master’s from Hillyer College and his 6th Year from the Univ. of Hartford. Upon graduation, he served in the US Army at Fort Bragg, NC. He then went on to serve the community of Terryville as an educator, teaching at the elementary and junior high school levels and then as principal of Terryville High School, finishing out his career doing what he did best, teaching math at Fisher Junior High School. He also was a golf coach at THS and a basketball coach at Tunxis Community College in Farmington. After his distinguished career as an educator he pursued his next favorite activity-golf, being a member of Pequabuck, Southington and Hawk’s Landing Country Clubs and various leagues through the years. He was a member of the BPOE (Elks) Lodge #1010 in Bristol, a longtime bowler, slow pitch baseball player and lifelong New York Giants fan, through thick and thin, and the best of times-4 Superbowl championships.
Along with his wife Beverly, he is survived by 2 daughters, Helen Henkel of Southington and Susan Hentz of Meriden, a brother Walter Henkel of Phoenix, AZ, a brother-in-law Michael J. Piatek of Plantsville, nephews Robert Henkel Jr. and Werner Henkel III of Guilford, NY and many cousins, nieces, nephews and many , many dear friends near and far. He was predeceased by brothers Robert and William Henkel and son-in-law David Hentz.
