Passed away on February 16, 2017 at the age of 84. Anne was predeceased by: her parents, Efrem and Staphie Bondarchuck, husband, David Hayes and sister, Nattie Taylor. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Alex Bondarchuk, sister-in-law Mary Bondarchuk, nephew, Alexander Bondarchuk and niece Debra Taylor and many relatives on the Hayes side of the family.
Anne was born and raised in Saskatchewan but attended high school at the St. Catharines Collegiate where she was a Rotary Medalist. Anne always wanted to teach both Grade 1 and high school English. She is a graduate of McMaster University and began her teaching career in 1954 with the Lincoln County Board of Education. She taught Grade 1 for eight years at Alexandra School and then proceeded to the St. Catharines Collegiate to teach Grade 13 English. Her greatest thrill was to teach her former Grade 1 students once again when they were in Grade 13. After the Collegiate Anne went on to Laura Secord High School to complete her teaching career.
Anne enjoyed, the arts deeply, walking in the neighbourhood and creating her autobiographical garden in her backyard. Anne’s sharp mind, kindness to all whom she met, and generosity will be missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing her.
Anne was the recipient of a kidney transplant 18 years ago. In honour of Anne, our family would ask that you consider signing your organ donor card. Because of the selfless act done by another individual we have had the gift of having our “Auntie Anne” for an “extra” eighteen years.
In the words of Robert Frost, “Everything I learned about life I can sum up in three words – it goes on”.
Cremation has already taken place. At Anne’s request there will be a private family remembrance at a later date. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to one of Anne’s favourite organizations. The Kidney Transplant Center at St. Joseph’s in Hamilton, Doctors Without Borders or Womens’ Place.
