So many old things do.
Laces and ivory and gold.
And silks need not be new.
And there is healing in old trees.
Old streets a glamour hold.
Why not l as well as they,
Grow lovely, growing old."
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Doris Shirley Cole (nee Cameron) on February 13, 2025, at the lovely age of 102. Born in St. Catharines, Ontario on September 16, 1922, Doris spent much of her childhood in Whitby, Ontario. She fondly looked back on that time and wore her Whitby High School ring daily.
Doris is predeceased by her husband of over 50 years, Stanley (d. 1996). She was the second child of Albert and Shirley (nee Noble), and predeceased by her two brothers Douglas (d. 1991) (Doris Onions), and Jack (d. 1996). Doris is survived by her sister-in-law Marjorie (nee Lavender), Jack's loving wife.
Doris will be missed by her two children, Allan Cole (Lynne), Janice Keyes (Kevin
d. 2005), two grand-daughters, Hilary Keyes, Monica Keyes (Ben), two great-grandchildren Ivor and Eleanor, and many nieces and nephews.
Doris was creative with a tremendous sense of humour. She was incredibly imaginative with a keen eye for detail. She loved to paint and sew, she loved word puzzles and was an avid listener of talk radio. Doris loved to discuss local history and to share stories of The Great Depression and World War II. She was a lifelong staple on her street, and her family will be forever grateful for her friends and neighbours who kept a watchful eye on her.
A private family service will be held at a later date when Doris is interred at St.
Thomas' Anglican Church in St. Catharines. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to The Salvation Army would be appreciated.
Special thank you to the team at Niagara Gardens who cared for her during the last few months of her life.
As Doris would say, we will see you in the movies!
