Jack is survived by sons, Dr. Geron Cowherd (Shelley), Dr. Conrad Cowherd (Henny), daughter Corinne Storms (Rebel) and their mother, Margaret Cowherd. 'Papa' to Maggie Groat (Jimmy), Taylor, Savannah, Tess, Abbie and Will. Jack was Great Grandpa to Casper, Woody and Otto and he was loved by many nieces, nephews and extended family. He was a kind and loving father, and friend to everyone. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him; “until we meet again”.
Born in Galt, Ontario on November 28, 1932, Jack was the only son of Reverend William (d.1990) and Olive (d.1974) Cowherd. Jack was elder brother to Barbara Linza (d.2018) (survived by her husband Reverend Raymond Linza). A graduate of Galt Collegiate, Jack went on to Spring Arbor College in Michigan and from there enrolled with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). While that career was not a lasting one, Jack moved on to work many years at Procter & Gamble and then Canadian International Paper while he and Margaret raised their young family. At a time in life when others were in the prime of their career, Jack embarked on a new challenge and enrolled in studies to become a Doctor of Chiropractic. That goal was achieved in 1976. For almost 20 years, Jack was a Chiropractor in the city of St. Catharines and cared for many people. Some of Jack’s interests included his love for the beautiful Muskoka area and boating on the open water on warm sunny days, car racing, indulging in chocolate chip cookies (with butter on top) and music. Jazz, big band and gospel music were among his favourites. Jack was not just an avid listener, as you could find him singing with passion and enthusiasm in church in his earlier years. Jack often made himself available to assist relatives and friends with projects and offer advice as needed.
The family would like to thank the kind staff (in particular Sisters Rosario and Irene) at Mount Carmel Home in St. Catharines who went above and beyond caring for Jack over the past three years. A thank you also to the doctors and nurses at the St. Catharines and Welland Hospitals. The family is very grateful to the many compassionate nurses who administered palliative care for Jack in the Welland Hospital Woolcott Wing during his final weeks.
The family will receive guests on Saturday March 23 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hulse & English Funeral Home & Chapel located at, 75 Church Street, St. Catharines. Cremation has already taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice, Mount Carmel Residence (905-685-9155) or to the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (Research) at www.cmcc.ca/support/give-to-cmcc.
