
Newman (Clark), and brother, Albert Franklin Newman. Survived by cherished life partner, Thomas McCarthy Sr. of St. Catharines, dearly loved nephews Jonathan Newman (Chantal Gervais), Ottawa and David Newman (Anne), treasured great-niece Emily Newman, friend and sister-in-law MaryEv Wyatt (Gerard), all of Kingston. Kathryn will be especially missed by her dear best friends Donna & David Cowan of Thorold, and Tom Jr. & Shelly McCarthy of Caledon, as well as her companion cat, Susan.
Born in Niagara, Ontario on May 8th, 1934, Kathryn earned a prestigious degree in Music (Voice) from the University of Toronto, Royal Conservatory of Music in October of 1959. Kathryn was a vibrant soloist with the Canadian Opera Company, performing in Toronto and travelling throughout Canada and the United States. A lifetime resident of South Drive, and passionate supporter of the arts and music in St. Catharines, Kathryn performed locally in productions such as the Mikado, and at the Stratford Festival, as well as being President of the St. Catharines Opera Guild during the 1970’s. Kathryn was alto soloist at First United Church in St. Catharines for over 25 years. Following a distinguished stage career, Kathryn continued her love of music, teaching privately from home, as well as formal instruction at Brock University, where Faculty and students alike appreciated her excellence, professionalism and variety of experience. Kathryn was actively involved in her community, volunteering for many years with the Humane Society and other organizations fostering her commitment and love of animals, having at one time provided refuge for six cats and many generations of family owned german shepherd and standard poodle dogs. Kathryn was well respected and loved for her kindness and generosity towards others.
As per Kathryn’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held at Fonthill Cemetery in June. The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Niagara Gardens, as well as Donna & David Cowan for their extraordinary friendship and support of Kathryn and her family, especially during these past difficult, transitional months.
Kathy, may every moment be filled with the glory of music and song, sunshine, freedom of movement and the joy of laughter and happiness. We will miss you always; we will forever hear your beautiful voice in our hearts.
