Passed away peacefully at Niagara Ina Grafton Gage on August 18. Cherished wife of the late Edwin (1989) and loving mother of Barry and Debbie (Bill) Heelis. Beloved Nanny to Megan McMath, Ryan (Bo) Heelis, Scott (Stacey) Heelis, and GG to Hannah, Kayleigh and Amber. Treasured sister in law to Bill and Doreen Dodge. She was born November 9, 1919 in Peckham, England, one of thirteen children. She worked at the De Havilland airplane plant contributing to the Second World War effort. She and Edwin immigrated to Canada with their children in 1957, for a better life, settling in St. Catharines for the rest of their married life together. She was a long time and proud employee of Eaton’s, as an inventory clerk in the pricing department, and of Calhoun Creations after which she retired in the late 70’s. She had a strong work ethic that was admired and appreciated by all. She and Edwin were avid curlers in the winter and enjoyed sharing their swimming pool in the summer with their grandchildren. They spent countless hours doing so. Her gardens were very much admired and meticulously maintained, giving her great joy. She and Edwin spent many happy times and years driving to Myrtle Beach with their friends in the fall, enjoying the sunshine, beach walks and shopping. Margery enjoyed listening and singing along to music, mostly of the big band era. There was always music playing in her house and this love of music was passed on to her children. After she was widowed, she became very interested in shuffleboard at the senior’s centre and was the reigning ‘Shuffleboard Queen” for a period of time. She was good natured being quick to laugh and join in the fun which endeared her to those that knew her including the residents and caregivers at Lookout Ridge, and most recently to the compassionate caregivers at Ina Grafton Gage where she was, at last, home again. A special thank you to the nurses, doctor and support staff at Ina Grafton Gage whose kindness and compassionate caring helped ease her transition to a better place. Family, above all, was very important to her and she will be deeply missed.
Her wishes were for a private interment and graveside service which is to take place at Pleasantview Cemetery, Fonthill. If desired, donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Niagara Ina Grafton Gage Foundation and may be done through the offices of HULSE & ENGLISH FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 75 Church St. (905-684-6346).
