My grandfather held a very important role in my life. He was a great listener and always told the greatest stories. I love his joyful laugh and his happy, independent personality. He always complimented me about how beautiful I looked whenever I walked through the door. I will miss his scratchy beard and the sound of his voice. I loved it when he came to speak to my class on Veterans Day and told stories, even though some were made up to make him sound cool to a group of 4th graders. I will cherish all of my memories with him. I love you very, very much, Grandpa!

There are so many things about Erv that I will miss, I do not know where to begin.  I will miss his laugh, I will miss his smile; I will certainly miss his off color jokes as well as the way in which he told them in such a uniquely Erv way.  Most of all, I will miss his presence; he carried such a unique vibe with him anywhere he went.  When he was in the same room, you could feel that he was there; the rooms where he used to be seem smaller now without him.  

I appreciate all the time we spent Erv.  I appreciate you saying "Yes, Of Course" when I asked you for permission to marry your daughter, I appreciate you befriending my father, I appreciate the tremendous gift of love, humor, and storytelling you shared with your grandchildren, and I appreciate you allowing me to be a part of your family.  

Most of all, I think it's the little things you miss when you lose someone.  I will forever miss walking into a room where you were and you greeting me with "Georgie".  

I guess the point is to say thank you.  Without you, I would not have the best partner, friend, or wife a person could ask for.  Without you, I would not have 2 children who have taught me the meaning of life.  Without you, your smile, your humor, your friendship, your guidance or your presence; I would not have any of the blessings I have today.  I consider it an honor to have been your son-in-law.  Until we meet again,

Mr. Hertel, my father-in-law, was the kindest, most forgiving soul I’ve met. We had many private talks about his experiences, most likely because of my career choice in serving veterans with mental health issues. He was funny, witty, inspiring, and tenacious. I married all the great parts of him in his son, Joshua. Mr. Hertel will be missed on this earth and he is at peace in his beautiful spirit. Rest. All my love. Anna
