Though his passing was unexpected, Galen is now at peace. His loss is a tremendous heartbreak to all who knew and loved him.
Born on August 10, 1966, Galen grew up on the East Side of St. Paul and proudly carried the title of “East Side Legend.” He graduated from Johnson High School and later attended Normandale College. In his younger years, he even ventured overseas to serve in the U.S. Army in Germany, where he continued to show his passion for commitment and service.
Galen was preceded in death by his loving parents, Carl and Lieselotte (Lisa) Nielsen.
He is survived by his two children—his pride and joy—daughter Nicole Nielsen-Om (Sam) and son Austen Nielsen; grandsons Junior (16) and Samir, due in September; brothers Frank, Scott (Tonya), George, and sister Roseann. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of friends who loved him dearly.
Known by many as G, Big G, or Papa G, Galen was a beloved father, brother, uncle, coach, and friend. His heart was as big as his personality—full of love, loyalty, and selflessness. He always put others first, especially his family, whom he worked tirelessly to support, nurture, and spoil. A jack of all trades with a strong work ethic, Galen’s dedication never wavered.
Galen was a phenomenal athlete in his youth, dominating every sport he played. As an adult, he became an influential coach and mentor—not just to his children and grandson—but to countless young athletes in his community. His passion, encouragement, and belief in others left a lasting mark on many lives.
A die-hard Minnesota Vikings fan, Galen bled purple and gold. He had a heart of gold, too—the kind that took care of everyone, especially his aging parents in their later years. He was loud and proud, full of life, swag, and unmatched charisma. With his animated storytelling, voices, jokes, and accents, Galen could light up any room. He loved to sing, rap, and whistle, and he had impeccable taste in music.
Galen was a clean freak—something he proudly inherited from his mother—and he had a gift for cooking, especially his famous lasagna. He never did anything halfway, and he often said so himself. His organizational skills and pride in everything he did were just part of what made him so memorable.
A caregiver, a provider, a protector—Galen was the best kind of person to be around. He was deeply loved and will be missed every single day. His legacy lives on in his children and grandchildren, who carry so many of his admirable qualities and joyful spirit.
Galen will live in our hearts forever.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, August 10th. 2-4 pm visitation with service starting at 4 pm at Wulff Funeral Home 1485 White Bear Ave. St. Paul, MN 55106.
