Gary was born in Braunswalde, Germany to Edmund and Theresia Steinberg. At the age of 21, he bravely immigrated to the United States, arriving at Ellis Island where he made his way to Alexandria, MN to be with distant family.
Gary proudly served in the United States Army, during which time he received his United States citizenship — a milestone he held with great pride.
An entrepreneur at heart, Gary owned and operated Hillcrest Glass for 29 years, earning a reputation for integrity, craftsmanship, and dedication. Upon retirement, Gary went back to school and earned his GED — a reflection of his perseverance and lifelong commitment to self-improvement. He deeply valued education and led by example. In later years, he was honored with the opportunity to speak at a commencement ceremony, inspiring graduates with his story of determination and faith. He was also a devoted member of the St. Paul Lions Club for 60 years, exemplifying his lifelong commitment to service and community.
Gary was a faith-filled man whose trust in the Lord guided his life. We take comfort knowing he now walks with Jesus Christ our Savior.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marianne Steinberg, and his children: Donna (Charles) Magnuson, Daniel (Pamela) Tauer, and Julianne (Brad) Wright. He was a proud Opa to Katey (Alex) Heimes, Mitchell (Lynette) Franssen, and Paige (Samuel) Fortner. He also leaves behind 4 great grandchildren: Madelyn Franssen, Edwin and Griffin Heimes and Warren Fortner. Gary also leaves behind brother Hermann (Gerlinde) Steinberg (Forest Lake), Franz (Helga) Steinberg of Germany and many friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
Gary’s life was marked by courage, perseverance, service, and deep love for his family. From a young immigrant stepping onto American soil to a proud citizen, veteran, business owner, and community servant, he built a legacy that will endure for generations.
If you feel inspired to honor Gary’s life, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choosing.
His life stands as a testament to faith, hard work, and the enduring power of the American dream.
