It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Eric Burns Parsons, age 85, of Sydney, who died at his residence at Parkland Shannex Sydney on June 12, 2026. Eric is survived by his wife Joan, son Eric (Kelly) and granddaughters Jessica and Emma. Eric was predeceased by a brother, Wilson.
Born in Halifax he was the son of Guy and Frieda Parsons. Eric excelled in school and athletics including baseball, football and hockey. He attended Dalhousie University completing a degree in Mathematics. While at Dalhousie he played varsity hockey and football. Following Dalhousie he attended Technical University of Nova Scotia completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
After graduation, Eric moved to Sydney where he accepted an engineering position at Sydney Steel Corporation. He spent his 30 plus year career working in a variety of management positions at the corporation. Eric retired in 1995. This provided more time for golf and volunteer activities including time as Chairman of the Sydney Steel Museum. Music was also a big part of Eric's, life playing for years with the Cape Breton Ukulele Strummers.
Eric was passionate about sports, playing and coaching baseball and hockey. He was respected for his skill, mentoring and leadership on the field and in the rink. Eric also picked up the game of golf as a member at the Lingan Golf Course for over 60 years. During this time he had five "hole in ones".
Dad was generous with his time and loved to chat and share stories. He was a mentor to many and loved to talk sports. He was devoted to his wife of 62 years and was a loved father and grandfather. Dad was respected, a fierce competitor, fair and quick to lend a hand to others. Many local charities benefited from his generosity including the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
