It is with sadness of heart that we announce the passing of icon, John "Abe" Abraham Hashem passed away on September 18, 2026 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Abe was born in Sydney to the late John P. and Freda (Hashem) Hashem and he is the last surviving member of his immediate family.
The Hashem family has been in business in Sydney since the very early 1900's and Abe continued to operate Hashem Scrap Iron and Metals up until 2002. Abe had a passion for travel. That passion brought him around the world. He loved to entertain and socialized with his many friends. He rarely missed a card game or breakfast with the guys. Abe was also very community minded and donated to several charities for many years. He had a zest for life, lived it to the fullest and always did it his way.
Besides his parents, Abe was predeceased by his sisters Martha Glancey, Angelina Sutton, Helen Woodhouse, Adele Hashem and his brothers Edward, Paul and George. Uncle Abe was a constant support to his many nieces and nephews. His kindness will always be remembered.
A funeral service will be held at 3pm on Sunday, Sept. 27 at TW Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. Our sincere thanks to the staff of CBRH, especially those of 4B and palliative care, whose compassion and professionalism were so appreciated.
