John Leo MacEachern

With heavy hearts, but hearts full of love and gratitude for a life so richly lived, we announce the passing of our beloved Dad, John Leo MacEachern, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. John passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at Hospice Cape Breton on September 1, 2026.

Born in Sydney on October 1, 1941, John was the eldest of eight children born to the late Archie and Jessie (MacLeod) MacEachern. John leaves behind his loving wife and best friend of 59 years, Paulette (Capitaine). He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Michelle (Paul) Coleman, Sydney; Karen (Kelly) O'Neil, Albert Bridge; and Deanna (Kevin) MacKinnon, Fall River. John shared a special bond with each of his daughters, and also with his sons-in-law, whom he loved as his own. He was immensely proud of his grandchildren, Taylor and Maddie Coleman, Logan, Luke and Lochlan O'Neil, and Nolan and Avery MacKinnon, who brought him immeasurable joy, and he took every opportunity to be part of their lives.

Also left to mourn are his sisters, Anna (Dave Poirier) and Mary (Dave French); his brothers, Archie (Marilyn), Jim "Rico," Len, and Mike (Annette); brother-in-law John Capitaine; along with many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including his lifelong childhood friend, Joe Gillis. Papa's special furry friends, Griffin and Tucker, brought him great joy, especially in his last few months. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his brother Donnie MacEachern and his wife Sheila; sister-in-law Susan MacEachern; and in-laws John and Lena Capitaine.

Family was everything to John. His stories, his familiar expressions, and the way he could turn an ordinary moment into a memory, are among the things his family and friends will miss the most. What made him truly special was not any single accomplishment, but the way he made people feel. John was a mentor in the truest sense, guiding and supporting so many throughout his life, beginning with his own brothers and sisters and continuing through his 33-year career in education with the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board, most notably as long-time principal at Sheriff Junior High, and closing his career with the opening of Sherwood Park Education Centre. He had a genuine gift for knowing when someone needed advice, encouragement, or simply a listening ear. In his later years, his greatest lessons were often the ones he taught simply by the way he lived, with integrity, compassion, and genuine care for others.

As a lifelong educator, coach, and community leader, John believed strongly in social justice and in giving back to his community. As Chair of the Sydney Credit Union, he was instrumental in establishing the Sydney Credit Union Charitable Foundation to enhance community health, financial literacy, and environmental protection within our community. He also dedicated his time to Youth Ministry with the Diocese of Antigonish, and volunteered with countless community committees and initiatives.

John’s love of sports was another important part of his life, whether he was playing, coaching, refereeing, or proudly cheering on his beloved Canadiens and Jays. His love, his wisdom, and the many lessons he taught us will remain in our hearts and guide us always. We are so grateful to have called him Dad and Papa, and we will miss him more than words can say.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, September 10 from 2–4 p.m. and 7–9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney, NS. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, 40 Cabot St., Sydney, on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 11 a.m. A reception will immediately follow at Membertou Trade and Convention Centre, Jenu Room (lower level). The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the An Cala Palliative Care and Hospice Cape Breton teams, along with VON Cape Breton, especially Helen Sweeney, for the exceptional care and support given to Dad and our family. A special thank you to Dad's lifelong physician, Dr. Steven MacDougall, for his compassion, friendship, and commitment to Dad's care over the years.
