

On October 6, 2026, John Malcom of Sydney passed away after a lengthy illness. Husband to an exceptional wife Dorothy and proud father to Kathryn, whose supportive partner Matt have made this journey possible. John is survived by sister-in-law Margaret (Calgary) and brothers-in-law Bob (Ottawa), Gord (Regina), Bill (Edmonton) and David (Victoria).
John was a graduate of the University of New Brunswick and University of Ottawa, as well as a recipient of an honorary doctorate from Cape Breton University. After graduation from Ottawa, he had a long career in health administration, first at the Ottawa General Hospital, followed by the Grace Maternity Hospital in Halifax, NS Department of Health, Saskatoon District Health and lastly Cape Breton District Health.
John loved to travel and had many great adventures with Dorothy, but was always drawn back to his two favourite locations, the Mira and Oak Bay, NB - where he spent his boyhood summers with the Young family. John grew up in Fredericton and was gifted by having two lifelong friends, Marc Horncastle and Dave Coleman, whose support, along with long time Halifax friend Steve Jensen, was exceptional.
Cremation has taken place and a visitation with family will be held at TW Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St. on Saturday, Oct. 10th from 2-4 & 7-9. Memories and condolences can be shared with the family by visiting twcurry.com.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the exceptional health care workers at the Regional Hospital, Palliative Care and VON. Donations to these organizations will assist them continue their work.
Finally, thank you to the many Cape Breton friends and colleagues who have made this journey so joyful. In his life John said there were two correct decisions he made, first was marrying Dorothy and second was moving to Cape Breton.
