Marina Elizabeth Denny

It is with profound sadness and much love that we announce the passing of our beloved wife and mother, Marina Elizabeth Denny fondly adored as Nanny, who passed away peacefully on September 13, 2026. We take comfort in knowing she was greeted by her daughter April Margaret whom she missed very much.

Born on February 2, 1951, in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Marina was the daughter of the late Frank S and late Mary Jane Gould. She was the great-great granddaughter of Grand Chief John Denny Jr. and great granddaughter of Grand Captain Simon Denny of the Mi’kmaw Nation.

Marina leaves behind her loving husband, Richard Denny; her children, Rina (Jason), Morgan and John Richard ‘Sa’n’ all of Eskasoni; her cherished grandchildren, Merissa, Lauren, Morgan Jaan, Denay, Maylie, Jayla, and Zoe and her great-grandchildren Deshawn, April, Addyson, Amaya, Alexi, Azia and two great-great granddaughters Dream and Sadie. She had a special relationship and deep love for all the children who held an incredibly special place in her heart.

She is also survived by her siblings, Rita Isaac, Francis (Mary Ellen) Gould, Russell Gould, Kenny (Priscilla) Gould, Allister (Cindy) Gould and Sheridan (Teedaze); her godchildren, Brian Toney, Bernadine Bernard, Kevanna Young, Tanner Gould, and Pauline Doucette; as well as many extended family members, dear friends, and all those whose lives were touched by her.

Besides her parents, Marina was predeceased by her beloved daughter, April Margaret, late great-granddaughter Amelia in infancy and her sisters, Freda Bernard, Emily Phillips, Pauline Googoo, Margaret Simon, Norma Doucette, brothers Paqsma Gould, Milton, Simon in infancy, Russell and her godchildren Blanche Isaac and Abe Doucette.

Those who knew Marina will remember a woman who loved deeply and laughed often. She treasured her family and friends and found happiness in being surrounded by the people she loved. She was well known for her cooking, and made many memories around a table by sharing the meals she prepared with such care. She had a passion for baking and the kitchen was her sanctuary. The smells of sweet dough, warm treats and homemade goodness were often the first thing that greeted family and friends. She was a wooden flower master, was also a beloved seamstress and loved knitting taking her time with every stitch as if she was crafting not just clothing but comfort itself.

While she lived a quiet life on the outside, she also had a streak of independence. No matter what she did, she approached life with creativity, grit and determination. Her favourite colour was purple and it was fitting as her personality carried the same kind of richness - thoughtful, unique and unforgettable. She will be missed deeply by all who knew her, especially by tose lucky enough to share her home, her stories, her food and her handmade treasures. Her legacy will live on in the love she gave, the comfort she made, and the traditions she helped to keep alive.

Marina spent her final days at Kiknu, where she was cared for during the last chapter of her life. We will always be grateful to those who provided her with care and companionship during this time. Also, many thanks to the CBRH and ICU unit for the compassion and kindness they provided during this difficult time.

Visitation will be held at the Eskasoni Gabriel Centre, 50 Gabriel St, Eskasoni beginning Sunday, September 20th at 7 pm. A Funeral Mass will take place at Holy Family Catholic Church on Tuesday, September 22nd at 10:00 am with Fr. Antolin Asor officiating. Burial and Salité immediately following.
