Irene was born on September 4, 1928 in Sydney to Isabel and David Grezel. She grew up in Sydney and worked as a french teacher for the Cape Breton Regional County School Board from 1976 to 1993.
At the age of 41, our mother made the bold decision to earn her high school equivalency and attend university, where she earned her BA (Hons) and B.Ed. While at university she learned french and reconnected with her father's french speaking family in St. Pierre et Miquelon. By pursuing her own education, she inspired many other women to follow their dreams, further their education and earn their own income.
In her spare time, our mother enjoyed fashion, fitness, dining out and keeping her mind busy. At 90 years of age, she was still going to the gym 4 days a week, playing bridge on Friday's and driving her car.
Irene was predeceased by her parents, Isabel and David Grezel, her siblings Maurice Grezel, Marguerite Mason, Paul Grezel and Freddy Grezel, her husband Patrick Cormier and her daughter Maria.
She is lovingly remembered by her children Edith (Terry), Marcel, David (Terri) and Renee, her eight grandchildren Sean, Matthew, Haley, Maurice, Marcel, Celeste. Danica and Liam and her two great grandchildren Aeden and Maeve.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Taigh Solas at the Northside General Hospital, as well as Irene's beloved niece, Carol Mason, for their compassionate care and support.
Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Irene's memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Memories and condolences can be shared with the family by visiting twcurry.com.
