Rita Dorothy Jessome

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Rita Dorothy (Lawlor) Jessome, age 98 at Hospice Cape Breton, on October 17th, 2026. She was born in Montreal, lived in Ottawa and retired with Dad to Sydney, Cape Breton in 1979. She was the daughter of the late Michael Lawlor and Catherine Fitzmorris.

She lived a long and wonderful life with Dad by her side, filled with so much joy. She loved to dance, play cards, darts and crafts and especially spend time with family. She was the most loving and caring mother to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Rita is survived by her children; Colleen (d. Scott), Catherine (Tom), George (Nada), Jennifer (Joe), grandchildren Michael (Sherry), Christopher (Danielle), Mia, Jana (Paul), Matthew, Andrew, great grandchildren Sarah (Journey), Bryce (Claire), Hayden (Ali) and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband George "Arnold" of 74 years and 14 siblings and was the last remaining member of her immediate family.

A heartfelt thank you to the staff of Hospice Cape Breton, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and Parkland Cape Breton where she resided and had many special friends. A special thank you to Dr. Steve MacDougall for taking care of her for over forty years. Also, a special thank you to Dr. D’Intino and staff for taking such excellent care of Mom. Their compassionate support as she left this world was a huge comfort to her family.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of T.W Curry Parkview Chapel. As per Mom’s wishes there will be a private family service with no visitation.
