James grew up primarily in Monroe, Louisiana. He received his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1971 and completed a psychiatric residency training program at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 1975. He was a graduate of the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute. Dr. Edgar was in private practice in San Francisco from 1975 until 1979, when he moved to Tampa. In Tampa, he established a private solo practice of psychiatry and psychoanalysis. He was a Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the University of South Florida School of Medicine and a past member of the Tampa Psychoanalytic Society, as well as a consultant to various civil and religious organizations.
James was an avid golfer, and he enjoyed socializing at Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club. He was a reader with a love for learning, particularly history. He also liked to travel, especially by train, and he always enjoyed good food and drink. In recent years, he researched the Edgar family genealogy and relished opportunities to show off his kilt. He was a compassionate physician.
James is survived by his wife, Bonnie Edgar, and their children Jessica Parker (Aaron), Ada Hawrylak (Mike), and John Edgar, as well as his five grandchildren: Nathan, Elaine, John, Henry, and Sarah. He is also survived by his beloved sister Terri Erwin, and her husband Doug. James was predeceased by his parents.
The funeral will be held Saturday, June 26, 2021 at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 10 a.m.
