Captain José Luis Neuman (USArmy, Retired), 93, of Tampa, Florida, passed quietly in his sleep on May 18, 2020. José was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico on October 21, 1926, the son of the late Charles Neuman from Curacao and the late Carmen (Otero) Neuman from Ponce, Puerto Rico.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Gladys (Lebron) Neuman. He is survived by his two sons and their wives, José Jr. and Maritza, Nestor and Ivonne, 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
José served 40 distinguished years of patriotic military and public service. During his military career José served tours overseas in Germany, Korea, Okinawa, Thailand and two tours in Vietnam. After graduating from high school José enlisted in the Army Air Corp toward the end of World War II serving as a Military Policeman and participated in the Berlin Airlift. After his enlistment José returned to Puerto Rico and entered the University of Puerto Rico where he received an ROTC commission and was then deployed to the Korean War. As an Army Vietnam veteran, José was awarded a Bronze Star for gallantry during hostile operations. José was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He had an incredible baritone voice that entertained family and friends throughout his lifetime. He touched the lives of all he met and will be greatly missed. His loss is unmeasurable; his impact on our lives unforgettable.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 24th from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at the Gonzalez Funeral Home, 7209 N. Dale Mabry, Tampa, FL 33614. Funeral services will then be held at 10AM on Monday, May 25th at the funeral home with interment with military honors to follow at Sunset Memory Gardens, 11005 N. US Hwy 301, Thonotosassa, FL 33592.
