Dr. Luis Bessone, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and renowned cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, passed away peacefully at home on March 14, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 89 years old.
Luis was born on January 23, 1936, in Rosario, Argentina. He graduated from the Universidad Nacional de Litoral, beginning a lifelong commitment to the study and practice of medicine. His passion for surgery led him to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, where he completed his internship, residency and fellowship. There, he also joined the faculty of the Department of Surgery, sharing his expertise with the next generation of surgeons.
Luis’s journey in the medical field took him to the Texas Heart Institute under the legendary Dr. Denton Cooley, further shaping his career as one of the finest cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons of his time. In the early 1970’s, he moved to Miami, Florida, before coming to Tampa to pioneer the heart surgery unit at Tampa General Hospital. Years later, he contributed to the establishment of the Heart Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital where he worked until his retirement. Over the years, Luis performed more than 1000 open-heart surgeries, each one a testament to his exceptional skill, dedication and compassionate care.
Dr. Bessone was known not only for his expertise but for his warm, kind, and approachable bedside manner. He developed lasting relationships with his patients and their families, many of whom stayed in touch with him for years after their surgeries. His generosity extended far beyond his medical practice, he was always there to lend a helping hand to family and friends in need.
Luis’s family was at the heart of everything he did. He is survived by his devoted wife, Viviana; his children, Rosanna Valenzuela (Henry), Luis M. Bessone (Stacey), and Marcello A. Bessone; and three cherished grandchildren, Henry Louis Valenzuela, Madeline Grace Valenzuela, and Luis Gerard Bessone.
A man of deep faith, Luis served as a lector and Eucharistic minister at Christ the King Catholic Church. He also had a profound love for travel, particularly visiting holy sites around the world and exploring Italy, the homeland of his beloved grandfather. Luis was an avid pilot and boat captain, enjoying the thrill of both the skies and the seas. Whether in the air or on the water, he excelled in everything he set out to accomplish.
Above all, Luis will be remembered for his radiant smile, infectious laugh, and quick wit. He had a unique ability to fill every room with warmth and joy. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His family is forever grateful for the many years shared with him and take comfort in the lasting legacy of healing, compassion, love, faith and kindness he leaves behind.
A visitation will be held at Blount & Curry Life Event Center on Wednesday, March 26th from 5-7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church on Thursday, March 27th at 10:00 AM.
