Dr. Luis Oswaldo Byrne Vidal of Tampa, Florida passed away peacefully on June 5, 2018, surrounded by his adoring family. A native of Barranco (Lima), Perú, and resident of Tampa, Florida for over 45 years, he is survived by his wife, Rosario G. Byrne, daughters Marie Harrell, Gigi Byrne and Monique Byrne Rogovin, grandchildren Trey, Alex, Jaylen, Carmen, Gabe and Felix, and siblings Fernando, Ana Maria, Julie and Lalo.
Dr. Byrne obtained his medical degree from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos – Facultad de Medicina San Fernando in Lima, Perú in 1963. He completed Rotating Residencies and Internship as follows: Rotating Internship 1964-1965 Mercy Hospital (Wilkes Barre, PA); 1965-1968 Medfield State Hospital (Medfield, MA); 1967-1968 Boston University Medical Center (Boston, MA); 1969-1970 Ottawa Civic Hospital (Ottawa, Canada).
Dr. Byrne was dedicated to his work in psychiatry throughout his life, actively pursuing stimulating and gratifying positions for nearly 50 years. He held academic appointments as Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa (1970-1971), University of Florida (1973-1975) and University of South Florida (1975-1983), and maintained private practices in both Tampa, FL and Lima, Perú from 1983 to 2007. He loved his work so much, that even after finally selling his primary practice in Tampa at the age of 71, he continued working at private institutions and clinics throughout Florida and in Lima on a temporary basis until a year before his death.
In addition to his passion for his work, Dr. Byrne spent much of his free time reading philosophy books and studying geneology. He became so fascinated with how the Byrnes from Ireland made their way to Peru that he eventually wrote a book entitled “Origen De Los Byrne En El Perú y Sudamerica” and translated it into English. In the book he invites any of the Byrne descendants to pick up the family research where he left off, stating that “the beauty of writing the book stems from the fact that the family research can go on even after my demise.”
Dr. Byrne had a great love and appreciation for animals and nature, particularly the beach having spent much of his childhood playing on the beaches in Barranco. But more than anything, he loved his home, his wife, his daughters and his grandchildren.
The family wishes to invite friends and family to the chapel of Gonzalez Funeral Home on Saturday, June 23, 2018. Visitation will be held at 3pm and a Memorial Service will follow at 4pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the National Brain Tumor Society. www.braintumor.org
