Maria Uiterwyk

UITERWYK, Maria (Miep), 97, of Columbus, N.C., and a resident of Tampa from 1955 to 1988 died Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at Tryon Estates Medical Center, Columbus, N.C. Born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, she was the daughter of the late Hendrik and Femia Drost Alberts and the wife of Jan Christiaan Uiterwyk, who predeceased her in 2005 after 66 years of marriage. Miep, along with her husband, founded Uiterwyk Corporation and Uiterwyk Shipping Lines with home offices in Tampa and other offices worldwide. For many years, she served as the chairwoman of the Tampa General Hospital Auxiliary. She and her husband were both very active in the Republican Party, and Miep served as a delegate to the 1984 presidential convention. Surviving are her brother, Henk Alberts (Johanna) of Tampa, her three sons, Robert H. Uiterwyk (Beth) of Hampton, VA, Jan D. Uiterwyk (Hart) of Brooksville, FL, and Hendrik Uiterwyk (Vicki) of Tampa. Also surviving are nine grandsons, Robert E. Uiterwyk (Nancy) of Atlanta, GA, Steven A. Uiterwyk of Lakeland, FL, John T. Uiterwyk (Patricia) of Laguna Nigel, CA., Jan C. Uiterwyk (Janel) of Piedmont, SD, Christopher S. Uiterwyk (Devon) of Norfolk, VA, Sean H. Uiterwyk (Lisa) of Hanover, NH, Dustin Graham (Carolina) of New York, NY, Patrick T. Uiterwyk (Kristin) Hingham MA, and John-Neil Uiterwyk (Megan) of Melbourne, Australia.; six granddaughters, Marieke Uiterwyk Nicol (Michael) of Dallas, TX, and Terrie E. Uiterwyk of Tampa; Jacqueline K. Conley of Portland, OR, Jessie M Miller, Tampa, FL., Jillena K.Valdez Tampa, FL and twenty one great-grandchildren. The grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Visitation with family will be held 5-7:30 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2015, at Blount & Curry Funeral Home, 605 S. Mac Dill Ave. A private graveside service with family only will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park.
