Martha was born on August 14, 1926 in Tuskegee, Alabama, to Annie Bullock Rush and Joseph Rivers Rush. After graduating from Huntingdon College in 1948 with a double major in History and English, Martha moved to Tampa to teach school. Martha was married for 25 years to Leslie E. Joughin, Jr. who preceded her in death. She later worked at Tampa General Hospital in the Admissions Department, facilitating reservations from doctors to admit their patients to the hospital. She also supervised the TGH Auxiliary Volunteers at the Information Desk before her retirement in 1991. While attending a preschool program for their grandchildren, Martha met Alvin Robin. Martha and Alvin were very happily married for 20 years until his passing in 2010.
Martha was a member of the Junior League of Tampa for over 70 years. She was a parishioner of St. John’s Episcopal Church. An avid golfer, she was active in the Palma Ceia Women’s Golf Association, and was proud to have earned the Club’s “Early Bird” trophy, and of her hole in one. Martha was an ardent Florida Gator and Tampa Bay Bucs fan, and her children always knew better than to call during a football game! Martha was an excellent bridge player and enjoyed playing with her friends throughout her life. She loved being around her family and hosted countless family gatherings over the years. As a former teacher, she never stopped correcting the grammar of her children or grandchildren. She was a wonderful mother and she especially loved her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family will deeply miss her sparkling blue eyes, gentle southern accent, and the strength, warmth and grace she exhibited throughout her life.
Martha was preceded in death by her sister, Ann Daniel, and her brothers, Joseph (Rip) Rush, Jr. and Atwood Rush. She is survived by her children, Anne Person (Christopher) and Leslie Joughin (Laurie); her grandchildren, Andrew Joughin, Margaret Drumsta (Matthew), and Charlie Joughin (Chad Griffin); her great-grandchildren, Lilyanne Drumsta and Logan Drumsta; and Alvin’s sons, Tracy Robin (JoRie), and Brion Robin; and Alvin’s three grandsons, Jonathon Robin, Stephen Robin and James Michael Robin; and her cousins, Evelyn Ellis and Sarah Owens.
A private service will be held for her at Myrtle Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be given to the H.B. Plant High School Academic Foundation (2415 S. Himes Avenue, Tampa, 33629), the proceeds of which fund the academic endeavors of the school’s teachers and students, or to Jesuit High School (4701 N. Himes Avenue, Tampa, FL 33614 or www.JesuitTampa.org/donate ), the proceeds of which provide the gift of education for students in need.
The family would like to thank Jessica Iosue for the love and kindness she gave to Martha in her final years.
