Born in Jacksonville, FL to Helen Mathis Alford and Rollin Green Alford, she and her sister Joanne Alford Taylor were raised in Baltimore, MD. She is survived by her beloved daughters CarolAnne (Steven Nelson) Fitzgerald of San Diego, California and Nancy Hildebrand of Austin, Texas, along with nephews Eric (Diane) Taylor and Chris (Laura) Taylor, the late William D. Bishop's children Kenneth Conner (Brenda) Bishop and Bill (Eliza) Bishop Jr., and her close friend and companion Steven Voss, as well as many dear friends and relatives.
She attended Purdue University where she joined the Chi Omega sorority. With boundless energy and ambition, Myra then completed a business degree at Rutgers in 1970 while raising children, volunteering for PBS in New York, and starting a marketing research business from home. Soon thereafter she moved to Houston, TX where she enjoyed a long, successful career (1970's - 2012) selling residential real estate, helping many Houstonians become happy homeowners.
Myra resided in several states and overseas countries during the course of her adult life, moving 19 times between New Jersey, Houston, Brazil, Holland, California and Iran. She was fortunate to spend many of her later years wedded to William D. Bishop until his passing in 2016.
Myra loved swimming and enjoyed other activities including traveling overseas, reading, and trading in the stock market. She played an active role in her community, participating in the New Jersey, Houston, and Tampa Junior Leagues. Her presence will be missed at Lake Magdalene’s Methodist Church, where she regularly attended services.
Throughout her life and into her later years, Myra was a welcoming, neighborly and principled person. Those who knew her loved and appreciated her generous spirit. Members of her community admired her devotion to her Christian values, as well as her love of the country that afforded her so much in this life.
A gathering of friends and family for Myra will be held Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Blount & Curry Life Event Center, 605 S MACDILL AVE, TAMPA, FL 33609, followed by a funeral service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
