Bill grew up in Austin, graduating from McCallum in 1965. He was on the track team specializing in high hurdles and relay. His training included running from Mansfield Dam to home on Justin Lane several times a week.
Bill had a variety of jobs over the years, beginning with selling Spud Nut donuts door to door with his Cub Scout Troop. During his teen years he was a bagger at Handy Andy Grocery. He was a journeyman in the Sheet Metal Union. He was a bartender at the Skyline Club in Austin, famous for their Wednesday 10 cent beer night. He opened Springhill Bar in Pflugerville and held a chicken & dumpling cook off each year.(Mainly because it was his favorite meal!)
After closing Springhill, Bill began doing custom hay baling, a job he loved and continued to "enjoy" until his health began to decline. He baled many of the same hay fields for decades.
Bill loved to go frog gigging and deer hunt. He looked forward to time spent with hunting buddies at deer camps in Texas and Colorado. He was proud of his 'rainbow' colored cow herd. It didn't matter to him what color they were as long as they had a calf each year and were a good mama cow. He enjoyed being a farmer and rancher, using skills he learned from his maternal grandfather, A. L, Boudny of Taylor.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and brother in law, Marcus Lerche.
Bill is survived by daughter Kimberly Guthrie Turnage of Highland Ranch, Colorado.
Sisters Darenda Phillips of Leander, Leelana Orr of Lufkin and Lavonna Lerche of Lexington.
Brother in law Billy Phillips and aunts Helen Fremin and Ruth Boudny of Coupland, numerous neices, nephews and cousins.
Special thank you to special friends: David Gibson, John Coats and Diane Voelker who visited, brought goodies and supported Bill through his health issues.
Corey Strmiska of Concho Hearts Hospice who provided compassionate care and cattle talk until the end.
