Dan Southerland

Dan Southerland, 78 of Troy, Texas died Monday February 23, 2009 in a Temple hospital. Services for Mr. Southerland will be held at 9:30 AM Wednesday February 25, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Troy with Rev. Paul Powell and Rev. Harlan Haines officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Roberts Cemetery in Troy, Texas. A visitation will be held from 6-8 PM Tuesday February 24, 2009 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple. Mr. Southerland was born January 14, 1931 in Pendleton, Texas the son of Rueben D. and Annie Laura Bradshaw Southerland. Dan graduated from Troy High School and attended Tarleton University and Temple Junior College. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in Korea from 1952 until 1954. He married the former Virginia Spohn April 20, 1952 at the First United Methodist Church in Troy. He retired in 1993 from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad as the Manager of Office Systems for the Southern Division after 42 years of service. He was a former Deacon of the First Baptist Church in Temple and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Troy at the time of his death. He was the past president of the Temple Railroad Association and was a member of the American Legion and the Sportsman's Club. Mr. Southerland is survived by his wife Virginia Southerland of Troy, two daughters Karla Southerland Riskind of Round Rock and Jill Southerland Chapman of Madill Oklahoma as well as one son Tim Southerland of Burleson and 5 grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters Joy Golightly of Grapevine and Patricia Pomykal of Troy and two brothers Bob Southerland of Temple and Don Southerland of Troy. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church 20 Church Avenue Troy, Texas 76579 or to Scott & White Hospital for Heart Research %Development Department 2401 South 31st Street Temple, Texas 76508.
