She attended school in Flat and The Grove communities, and she graduated from Moody High School in 1938 at age sixteen. While attending North Texas State Teachers College (now UNT) in Denton for one year, she cut class only once—to see Gone with the Wind.
She left Denton to work at Montgomery Ward in Fort Worth in order to pay back her grandfather the $50 he had loaned her to go to college for that year. She met Norris Gale “Doc” Waskom in Fort Worth, and when he asked her to marry him in 1943, she refused, saying she would not marry him in 1943. He countered with, “Okay, let’s get married January 1, 1944 at midnight!” which they did at Connell Memorial Baptist Church in Ft. Worth. They were married 34 years until his death.
Initially she was a stay-at-home mom, but she began working at Sears in the credit department in 1961. She was promoted to Supervisor and retired from Sears in 1984 after 23 years of service.
On May 12, 1979 she married Kline D. Shaver, Jr., in Fort Worth, and in 1984 they built a home on Lake Granbury. During the 14 years they were married until his death, they enjoyed traveling together, especially to Lake City, Colorado where they hiked, four-wheeled, and snowmobiled. Lake City became a favorite vacation place for all the family, including many extended family members and friends.
She was active in all the churches of which she was a member, including Birchman Avenue, Springdale, and South Hills Baptist Churches in Fort Worth, and First Baptist Granbury and First Baptist Belton. She was the general secretary for Sunday School for many years at Springdale and was also the church teller. Additionally, in all the churches where she was a member, she sang in the choir.
Known as an excellent cook, she also enjoyed reading extensively, visiting with family and friends, and vacationing in Lake City.
