Mrs. Gladys Bigler Stamman passed away peacefully at the age of 87 in the Temple apartment that she shared with her husband, Mr. Otto G. Stamman, on May 24, 2007, after a prolonged struggle with Parkinsons Disease. Her husband of 66 years was by her side, as he has been for their long life together. She was also surrounded at her bedside by other family members and her caregivers. Services for Mrs. Stamman will be at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, August 15, at the Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple. Minister Joe Baisden will officiate and Mike Stirman will provide vocal support. Gladys Stamman was born in Beanhill (Bell County), Texas, on April 28, 1920 to Benjamin and Eva (Stock) Bigler. She was valedictorian at Oenaville High School, attended Temple College, and graduated with honors from the Washington School of Arts. She lived briefly in Brownsville, Texas, before her husband, who was in the Army, was sent to serve in Europe during World War II. After the war, Otto and Gladys made Temple their home and began a family. Gladys was a talented and accomplished artist, working in many different media and winning many awards in all of them. Her works of art are cherished by people all over the country. She used her artist talent to enhance all her pursuits, including as a Bible School teacher, seamstress, gardener, cook, photographer, quilter, and homemaker. She had been a member of the Bell Fine Arts Society and the Texas Gourd Society. She and her husband have been life-long members of the Temple congregations of the Church of Christ, most recently with the Western Hills Congregation. Gladys is survived by her husband, Otto Stamman, also of Temple; her children, David Stamman and his wife Ann of Austin and Elaine Stamman Segar and her husband Doug, of El Cerrito, California; a sister, Loretta Bernsen of Temple' and two granddaughters, Marian and Julia Stamman, both of Austin.
