Family and friends of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Gladys W. Malina, 93, of Temple are invited to graveside services at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, at Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple. The Reverend Roy Parker will officiate. Gladys died on Sunday, May 16, 2010, at a local healthcare center. Gladys was born on November 23, 1916, to Clement Waguespack and Eugenie Melancon Waguespack in Lockport, Louisiana. After the death of Clement J. Waguespack, his widow had enough money to buy train tickets that took her and her six children as far as Marfa, Texas. Gladys graduated from Marfa High School in 1934 and married Jerry L. Malina on March 3, 1939. They had a son, Jerry L. Malina, Jr. born in 1940. Mr. Malina was a graduate of the American Baking Institute in Chicago and worked in the family business, the Marfa Bakery, with his father and brother. During World War II the Marfa Bakery provided baked goods to Fort D. A. Russell Army Base and Marfa Army Airfield. Gladys worked in civilian personnel at Fort D. A. Russell Army Base during the war and decorated special occasion cakes, especially wedding cakes, at the bakery. In 1950 the family moved to Temple where Gladys worked in civilian personnel payroll at Fort Hood until her retirement in 1981. She was a member of ABWA, the City Federation of Women's Clubs Book Club, and SPJST. She was a longtime volunteer at Santa Fe Hospital and King's Daughters Hospital where she enjoyed working in the gift shop. She was a member of The Texas Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. Gladys was an avid bowler and traveled to more than fifteen states with her friends and teams for tournaments. She bowled in several leagues on teams named The Fire Crackers, Three Gals and a Guy and The Cool Ones. She participated in the Texas Senior Games and won several medals for her bowling skills and was a member of the Texas Women's Bowling Association. She was a member of the Debra Sunday School class at Memorial Baptist Church where she had been a member since 1959. Gladys was a cheerful, uplifting and gracious lady with a ready smile for everyone. Her endearing personality made those around her feel loved and she had many life-long friends. She was a "second Mom" to her son's friends when he was in high school and they never failed to ask about Gladys in her later years. Gladys dearly loved all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always had open arms and a kiss for each of them. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jerry L. Malina in 1975 and siblings Nola Adams, Roy Waguespack, John Waguespack and Davis Waguespack. Gladys is survived by her son, Jerry L. Malina, Jr. and wife, Daurice, of Belton; grandson, Jeff Malina, of Temple; granddaughter, Julie Malina Carling and husband, Duncan, of San Francisco, California; and two great-granddaughters, Sabrina and Hanley Jane Carling. Gladys is also survived by a sister, Elizabeth Wright of Dallas, and two step-grandchildren, Susan Jarrell and husband, Josh Carter, of Brooklyn, New York; and Kenneth Jarrell and wife, Abbey, of Temple. Stepgreat-grandchildren are: Jackson Jarrell, Reed Carter and Augustine Jarrell of Brooklyn, New York and Andrew and Mallory Jarrell of Temple.
