

Harold D. Payne, age 92, of Temple died Thursday, October 15, 2009 in a local nursing center. Services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, October 19 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with Dr. H. K. Sorrell and Chaplain Ralph McCulloh officiating. Military honors will be furnished by the Louis Wayne Qualls Detachment, Marine Corps League immediately following the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Bellwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 6:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Harold Dickson Payne was born on December 11, 1916 in Dyer County, Tennessee to John Dickson and Minnie (Hassell) Payne. He was reared in Tennessee and graduated from Friendship High School in Friendship, Tennessee in 1935. He moved to San Antonio in 1937. He attended Draughon's Business College and began working for the Coca Cola Bottling Company. He worked there until World War II when he became a United States Marine in September of 1942. He was stationed on different island groups in the central Pacific Ocean for two years. He was discharged from the Marines in San Diego, California in November of 1945. He returned to San Antonio and the Coca Cola Bottling Company. In 1954, he was transferred to Temple and became the sales manager and vice-president of the bottling company. He retired in 1978. He married Jean Elliott on February 2, 1947 in San Antonio. Jean died in August of 1959. Harold and Jane Hodges Schreiber of Temple were married on April 9, 1995. Mr. Payne was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Temple and the Friendship Sunday School Class, serving as president for two years. He was a loyal and active member of the Elks Lodge #138 for many years. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Louis Wayne Qualls Detachment of the Marine Corps League. He was also preceded in death by his parents and five sisters. Survivors include his wife, Jane Payne of Temple, a stepdaughter, Kathryn Schreiber Huffman and husband, Lonnie of Corsicana, a stepson, Dr. James R. Schreiber and wife, Mary of St. Louis, Missouri, six step-grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren. Other survivors are nieces, Annette Kail of Alamo, Tennessee, Mildred Moreland of Tupelo, Mississippi, Geraldine McMenemy of Bells, Tennessee and two nephews, Dr. H. K. Sorrells of Brownsville, Tennessee and Bill Payne Smith of Stevensville, Michigan. Active pallbearers will be H. H. Hanna, Ken Morrison, Nelson Clausen, Lonnie Huffman, Lt. Chris Clausen, Dr. Wayne Matthews, Charles R. Perry and Alec Arriaga. Honorary pallbearers are Clyde Fleagle, Wilson Moon and Bill Jackson.
