

Kenneth R. Slaughter, age 78, of Temple, died November 25th, 2017, at Baylor Scott & White in Temple, Texas surrounded by his loving family. Services will be held on Monday, December 11th, 2017 with recitation of the rosary at 10:00 followed by funeral service at 11:00 AM at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 10th, 2017 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Bellwood Memorial Park. Kenneth Slaughter, or Dad and Ken to his family and friends and Grandpa Ken to his grandchildren, was born on September 5, 1939 in Hays, Kansas to Raymond and Eva Slaughter. He graduated from Wichita East High School in Wichita, Kansas in 1957. Kenneth worked for Joyland Amusement Park, Alon, Inc., Beech Aircraft, Gates Learjet, Kreonite, and National Cash Register in Kansas. He graduated from Wichita State University in 1975 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Moving to Texas with his family in 1978, he worked as a mechanical engineer with Texas Instruments on the division that was designing one of the first personal computers. He moved to Temple with Texas Instruments in 1981. In 1982 he started a 22 year career with the Civil Service at Fort Hood. He assisted the Directorate of Public Works on many projects including the new III Corps HQ Building at Fort Hood. He retired in 2004. Kenneth’s love of his family, caregivers, and neighbors was admired by all who knew him. He was a supporter of the Boy Scouts and was active in the Parkinson’s Support Group for over 10 years with his “Earth Angel” and daughter in law Deborah Slaughter. He was an avid birdwatcher, stamp and pipe collector, astronomer, golfer, chess player and Scrabble enthusiast. He loved the Texas Rangers and watched every baseball game. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Francis Finch, of St Louis, Missouri. Survivors include his son, John and daughter in law Deborah (Worley) Slaughter of Temple, Texas and son, Benjamin Slaughter of Round Rock, Texas; grandson, Cody Stewart and granddaughter, Kaitlyn Stewart, both of Temple and great grandson, Aiden Stewart of Temple. He is also survived by his ex-wife, Carol Hodge of Temple, Texas. Special thanks go to all of his caregivers with Hospice Compassus, Visiting Angels, Senior Care Marlandwood East and Scott and White Hospital. These are extraordinary people that did much to keep his quality of life at the highest! He had a great life and touched everyone he met in a positive way. We will all miss Grandpa Ken and Dad and will look forward to seeing him again in Heaven!
