

Sylvera Cole Barton, age 96 of Temple, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2013 in a local care center. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 12, at Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Ridge Adams, Rev. Roy Parker and Rev. Robert Mattson officiating. Private burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 - 7:00 PM Friday, October 11 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home. Mrs. Barton was born November 26, 1916 on the family farm in the Okay community nine miles southwest of Killeen which is now West Fort Hood. She was the first daughter and the second child born to Ernest Allen Cole and Nettie Mae Henderson Cole. In the late 20's, the family moved to Temple. At an early age she joined Memorial Baptist Church and was active in most of the church ministries. She taught the Truth Seekers Class for over 50 years and often referred to the ladies as "her girls". She was a member of the Temple area Church Women and helped in Churches Touching Lives for Christ. She married Robert Wilson Barton Jr. in the church. She graduated from Temple High School in 1935. She received her bachelor's of science degree from Mary Hardin-Baylor and her master's degree from Baylor University. Mrs. Barton taught school in Aransas Pass, Temple and retired from Belton ISD as Counselor for Special Education. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired Teacher's, Daughters of the Republic of Texas and East Bell County Genealogical Society. Sylvera enjoyed reading, sewing, genealogy and traveling. The Bartons toured all 50 states and most of Canada with their children and grandchildren. She traveled on all continents except Antarctica with the R. B. and Bettye Baker group. She was preceded by her parents, her sister, Coleta Cole Hamrick and brothers, John Tate Cole, Allen Cole and Henderson Cole and her daughter-in-law, Lesa Barton and her husband of 65 years. Survivors include her daughter, Sue Barton Lykes and husband, June of Gatesville, two sons, Robert Wilson Barton III of Grants Pass, Oregon and Jack Cole Barton and wife, Jan of Temple, three grandchildren, Lisa Lykes Coats and husband, Larry of Cedar Park, Laine Lykes Gage and husband, Brian of Decatur and Jack Cole Barton Jr. of Coupland, six great-grandchildren, Cara Beth, Jared and Abbie Coats all of Cedar Park, Zack and Delainie Gage of Decatur, Jack Cole Barton III and wife, Danielle and two great-great-grandchildren, Adally and Hunter Barton all of Leander. Also surviving is one sister, Mildred Myers of Temple. Memorial donations may be made to one's charity of choice.
