To Sam's Family, 

Sam and I grew close in between the years of 2018 and 2020.  We met through mutual friends of Bond St. We clicked immediately. She and I would often run into each other on our own adventures reading at cafès and bars. We had this similar feeling of gratefulness, cynicism, and humor that led us to laugh and speak for hours. I think we had similar pasts. Each time we'd speak it felt like we were blossoming hopeful. 

I was supposed to see Sam before she left for California, but she left earlier than planned. This sparked an idea - I was going to ride on out West and work with Sam on the farm... maybe for a month (including travel). We talked a couple times a week trying to set it all up, but the more time passed the worse COVID spread and the more people were retreating to Northern California.  We decided it was best to hold off. As a result, I had to start organizing myself for school.

When Sam got out onto the farm, she was the happiest since I'd last seen her. She would tell me about the animals and the way there was hardly any cell service. She told me of the moments of relaxation and would marvel at the simple joys most people take for granted. She was a rebel rouser, confrontational in the most refreshing of ways and eternally effervescent, kind. 

The last chance I had to see her was in September. She was on the East Coast. We had missed each other again. She was on her way to the airport when she said, "I love you we'll make it happen. Thank you <3." I miss her.

I miss her smile and the way Sam moved through the world. She inspired me.  I wish I was on the farm with her to give her a hug her and tell her she's doing it; telling her she is making her path and as long as she is happy moving onward on her new path, she's made it. 

To the family, I never met you. I know you have seen such tremendous changes in your life this year. I send you all of my love. Your resilience is powerful. I will always love Sam. She will live with me forever.
