Agnes Reta Monka (nee Tournour) was born June 18, 1932 to Joseph and Maria Benedetta Tournour. She was the beloved wife of the late Aaron Monka of Toronto, and dear sister of Mary Tournour (predeceased) and Arthur (Anne) Tournour (both predeceased). She was a cherished Aunt to over 20 nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Aggie grew up in Toronto. She started work at Royal Insurance right after high school, working her way up from the mail room to be a valued member of the payroll department. During her years there, many friendships were forged that lasted her lifetime. After her retirement from Royal Insurance, she worked for many years at the Toronto District School Board also in the payroll department. Not one to be idle Aggie was then an active volunteer for over 20 years at St. John’s Rehab Centre in North York. She also spent many years as an active member of the Catholic Women’s League.
Aggie along with her husband Aaron, had a wide circle of friends, enjoying many lively dinners, bridge games, golf games, lunches, and movies. Both with Aaron, and also in her later years she enjoyed travelling to Las Vegas, the Catskills, California, and Florida. Aggie was a staunch Blue Jays fan and rarely missed watching a game on tv.
Family was very important to Aggie and she, along with Aaron and her sister Mary, made countless trips to Bracebridge, Muskoka for holiday dinners and family events. She also enjoyed time spent with nieces and nephews who are local to Toronto as well as those in California. Aggie was always delighted when a new niece or nephew arrived to make her family bigger.
Aggie did not slow down until she experienced a stroke in late 2020. She subsequently moved to Castle Peak Retirement Residence in Bracebridge to be closer to family and receive the assistance she needed. She quickly became a well liked member of her new community regularly attending bingo, and occasionally showing up at happy hour for a gin and tonic!
Perhaps what Aggie will be most remembered for was her kind and generous nature. She was always available to help family, friends or neighbors, and readily shared her warm smile and welcoming nature with everyone she met.
Aggie passed away peacefully on September 13, 2023 at Andy's House Hospice in Port Carling, Muskoka, with family by her side. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew her.
